What it actually does
Use-after-free in the bfa SCSI driver caused by double invocation of fc_release_transport when bfad_im_module_init fails, leading to slab memory corruption during module cleanup on error paths.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel instability or potential privilege escalation on systems with Brocade Fibre Channel adapters can disrupt storage connectivity and require emergency reboots or forensic investigation.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access triggers module initialization failure in the bfa driver (e.g., via crafted module parameters or resource exhaustion) so that bfad_im_module_exit is still called, resulting in the double free of the transport template and subsequent memory corruption exploitable for code execution.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to commit 0ceac8012d3ddea3317f0d82934293d05feb8af1 or later stable release that avoids calling bfad_im_module_exit on bfad_im_module_init failure; apply vendor backports for affected distributions.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify kernel source or running version includes the fix commit; attempt module load under error conditions and confirm absence of KASAN reports referencing bfad_im_module_exit or double fc_release_transport calls.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local access to target system
- Cause partial failure in bfad_im_module_init during bfa module load
- Trigger bfad_im_module_exit which calls fc_release_transport twice
- Exploit resulting use-after-free for memory corruption or privilege escalation
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and KASAN reports for strings referencing bfad_im_module_exit, fc_release_transport double release, or slab-use-after-free in __lock_acquire during modprobe of the bfa module.
- bfad_im_module_exit+0x23/0x60 [bfa]
- fc_release_transport+0x19/0x90 [scsi_transport_fc]
- BUG: KASAN: slab-use-after-free in __lock_acquire
- attribute_container_unregister+0x30/0x160
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on systems exposing the bfa driver
- Restrict unprivileged module loading via kernel module signing and CAP_SYS_MODULE controls
- Monitor for kernel oops involving bfa and scsi_transport_fc
- Audit systems with Brocade FC hardware for exposure before applying updates
