What it actually does
Slab-use-after-free read vulnerability in set_powered_sync (net/bluetooth/mgmt.c:1353) triggered when a pending mgmt operation allocated via mgmt_pending_add is freed by settings_rsp during concurrent hci_dev_close_sync or power-off paths, allowing a kworker to dereference the freed object.
Why it matters to the business
Linux systems using Bluetooth may experience kernel crashes and denial of service; high prevalence of the kernel across servers, desktops, and embedded devices increases operational disruption risk, especially where Bluetooth management commands are processed.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access or via malicious userspace sends HCI management commands that allocate a pending structure, then forces a race with device close or power-off routines that free the structure before the synchronous command work completes, resulting in the use-after-free read.
How to fix it
Apply the upstream kernel patch resolving the use-after-free in mgmt.c or upgrade to a kernel version containing the fix for CVE-2024-53208; rebuild and reboot systems after updating the Bluetooth stack.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the kernel source contains the corrected set_powered_sync logic without the dangling pointer; test by exercising mgmt set_powered and close paths under KASAN or run regression suites covering hci_mgmt_cmd.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local access or control a process that can send HCI socket commands
- Issue mgmt set_powered command to allocate pending entry
- Trigger concurrent hci_dev_close or __mgmt_power_off to free the entry via settings_rsp
- Allow hci_cmd_sync_work to execute set_powered_sync on the freed slab object
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and crash dumps for KASAN reports citing set_powered_sync, hci_cmd_sync_work, or mgmt_pending_foreach; inspect for concurrent allocation/free patterns involving mgmt_util.c and hci_sync.c.

What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all Linux endpoints exposing Bluetooth sockets
- Monitor for KASAN or slab corruption reports referencing mgmt.c:1353
- Restrict unprivileged access to HCI sockets where possible
- Review EPSS trend and threat actor mentions for any future increase in exploitation
