A flaw in how Linux handles certain file operations over network shares can waste memory and cause crashes when connections drop and recover, requiring a software update to resolve.

What it actually does
Race condition in CIFS/SMB client open_cached_dir() during tcon reconnection allows cfid objects to be removed from the entries list without dropping their reference count when has_lease is false, resulting in a memory leak of 1024-byte kernel objects and associated dentry structures that persist after unmount.
Why it matters to the business
Repeated SMB directory operations under network instability can exhaust kernel memory on Linux systems, causing performance degradation, failed filesystem operations, or crashes during unmount of CIFS mounts; widespread Linux kernel deployments increase exposure across servers and containers.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker triggers repeated directory enumeration over SMB while inducing tcon reconnections (via network disruption or crafted responses); the race in open_cached_dir() and invalidate_all_cached_dirs() leaves cfids with elevated refcounts that are never released, leaking memory until the system is exhausted or unmounted.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 31fabf70d58388d5475e48ca8a6b7d2847b36678 or later; apply vendor backports for stable branches; avoid unmounting CIFS filesystems under active directory workloads until patched.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel version includes the referenced commit; run kmemleak scans after simulated reconnect/readdir workloads; verify no BUG splats or dentry warnings appear on cifs umount; check for absence of the described backtrace in open_cached_dir().
Typical attack path
- Establish SMB/CIFS mount to target
- Induce concurrent directory reads (readdir/getdents) while forcing reconnection
- Trigger invalidate_all_cached_dirs() during cfid construction
- Observe unreferenced kmemleak objects and eventual mount/umount failures
How to detect it
Search kernel logs for kmemleak reports referencing open_cached_dir and __kmalloc_cache; inspect dmesg or syslog for BUG splats in umount_check or cifs_kill_sb during CIFS unmount; review audit logs for repeated readdir syscalls around network disconnect events.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all systems using CIFS/SMB mounts within maintenance windows
- Monitor EPSS and threat actor reports for any rise in exploitation of related kernel races
- Implement filesystem mount options that limit reconnection frequency where possible
- Add kernel memory leak monitoring to production observability dashboards
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: smb: Don't leak cfid when reconnect races with open_cached_dir open_cached_dir() may either race with the tcon reconnection even before compound_send_recv() or directly trigger a reconnection via SMB2_open_init() or SMB_query_info_init(). The reconnection process invokes invalidate_all_cached_dirs() via cifs_mark_open_files_invalid(), which removes all cfids from the cfids->entries list but doesn't drop a ref if has_lease isn't true. This results in the currently-being-constructed cfid not being on the list, but still having a refcount of 2. It leaks if returned from open_cached_dir(). Fix this by setting cfid->has_lease when the ref is actually taken; the cfid will not be used by other threads until it has a valid time.
