What it actually does
Use-after-free in sctp_v6_available() caused by calling dev_get_by_index_rcu() and ipv6_chk_addr() without holding the RCU read lock during SCTP IPv6 bind operations.
Why it matters to the business
Linux systems using SCTP over IPv6 can experience kernel crashes, memory corruption, or local privilege escalation; high ecosystem prevalence increases exposure for servers and containers.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access creates an SCTP IPv6 socket, issues a bind syscall, and triggers the unprotected RCU traversal in sctp_v6_available() to dereference freed memory, leading to UAF exploitation.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to commit ad975697211f4f2c4ce61c3ba524fd14d88ceab8 or later stable releases containing the fix; apply vendor kernel updates immediately given the high CVSS and potential for local escalation.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify kernel source contains the RCU read lock around dev_get_by_index_rcu() and ipv6_chk_addr() calls in sctp_v6_available(); confirm no lockdep RCU warnings occur during SCTP bind operations on patched builds.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local user access on a vulnerable Linux kernel
- Create an AF_INET6 SCTP socket
- Call bind() on the socket to invoke sctp_do_bind()
- Trigger sctp_v6_available() without RCU protection
- Exploit resulting UAF for crash or code execution
How to detect it
Inspect kernel logs for RCU-list warnings referencing dev_get_by_index_rcu or sctp_v6_available; correlate bind syscalls from untrusted processes with subsequent kernel oops or panic events.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all systems exposing SCTP over IPv6
- Monitor for local privilege escalation attempts on Linux hosts
- Restrict untrusted local access until patches are deployed
- Review SCTP usage and disable IPv6 SCTP where unnecessary
