What it actually does

Stack-allocated string passed to pcim_iomap_regions() in psnet_open_pf_bar() and snet_open_vf_bar() is not copied by the function or its callees; once the calling stack frame is destroyed the pointer references freed memory, producing undefined behavior classified as use-after-free.

Why it matters to the business

Kernel instability or potential code execution on systems using the solidrun nvdpa driver can interrupt virtualized networking services; with 331 downstream dependents the flaw affects a broad set of Linux-based appliances and cloud instances until patched.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access or the ability to trigger device initialization repeatedly invokes the affected open functions, forces the stack frame to be reclaimed, then arranges for the dangling pointer to be dereferenced, converting the undefined behavior into a kernel read/write primitive.

How to fix it

Update the Linux kernel to commit d372dd09cfbf1324f54cbffd81fcaf6cdf3e608e or a later stable release that replaces the stack string with a devm_kasprintf() heap allocation.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the running kernel contains the cited commit or verify source that pcim_iomap_regions() receives a heap-allocated string; recompile and boot-test the driver to ensure no stack-string path remains.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local execution or trigger device probe on a vulnerable kernel
  2. Call psnet_open_pf_bar() or snet_open_vf_bar() to place the string on the stack
  3. Allow the stack frame to be popped while the pointer remains live
  4. Trigger subsequent use of the string inside pcim_iomap_regions() or related devres code
  5. Leverage resulting memory corruption for privilege escalation or denial of service

How to detect it

Review kernel logs for oops or panic entries referencing nvdpa solidrun or pcim_iomap_regions after device initialization; inspect auditd or syscall logs for unusual device open sequences; correlate with any subsequent use-after-free warnings from KASAN or similar instrumentation.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel upgrade on all hosts exposing nvdpa solidrun devices
  • Monitor vendor advisories for backported fixes in distribution kernels
  • Restrict unprivileged local access until patches are applied
  • Include the driver in automated kernel regression testing

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: vdpa: solidrun: Fix UB bug with devres In psnet_open_pf_bar() and snet_open_vf_bar() a string later passed to pcim_iomap_regions() is placed on the stack. Neither pcim_iomap_regions() nor the functions it calls copy that string. Should the string later ever be used, this, consequently, causes undefined behavior since the stack frame will by then have disappeared. Fix the bug by allocating the strings on the heap through devm_kasprintf().
