What it actually does
Race condition in MPTCP disconnect handling allows sk_wait_data to return with a disconnected socket and zero rcv_mss, triggering a divide-by-zero in __tcp_select_window during mptcp_recvmsg.
Why it matters to the business
Local users can trigger kernel oops and denial of service on systems running vulnerable Linux kernels with MPTCP enabled, potentially disrupting network services and requiring reboots; widespread kernel deployment increases exposure across servers and devices.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access crafts a sequence of socket operations that races a disconnect against receive handling in MPTCP; this leaves rcv_mss at zero when __tcp_select_window is called from mptcp_recvmsg, causing the divide error and kernel panic. No remote unauthenticated vector exists.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to commit ffc253263a1375a65fa6c9f62a893e9767fbebfa or later; rebuild and reboot with the patched kernel. Disable MPTCP if the feature is not required as a temporary mitigation.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel source contains the fix commit or check version string after update; attempt to reproduce the original syzkaller reproducer and verify it no longer triggers the divide error oops.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local code execution or user access on target Linux system
- Create MPTCP socket and initiate connection
- Trigger concurrent disconnect and receive operations via syz-executor style reproducer or equivalent race
- Force __tcp_select_window to divide by zero rcv_mss value
- Observe kernel oops and potential system instability
How to detect it
Search kernel logs (dmesg, /var/log/kern.log, journalctl) for 'divide error' combined with '__tcp_select_window' and 'mptcp_recvmsg'; inspect for preceding socket disconnect races or syz-executor processes.

- RAX: 0000000000017e67 RBX: 0000000000017e67
- syz-executor
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrade to the fixed commit across all affected Linux deployments within standard patch windows
- Monitor for local privilege or availability issues on MPTCP-enabled hosts
- Review system logs for prior divide error oops mentioning __tcp_select_window and mptcp
- Consider disabling MPTCP via sysctl where not explicitly needed

The root cause is the current bad handling of racing disconnect. After the blamed commit below, sk_wait_data() can return (with error) with the underlying socket disconnected and a zero rcv_mss. Catch the error and return without performing any additional operations on the current socket.
