What it actually does

Failed OCFS2_IOC_GROUP_ADD ioctl leaves a buffer head cached in ocfs2; subsequent ioctl on same inode triggers BUG in ocfs2_set_new_buffer_uptodate due to duplicate uptodate marking.

Why it matters to the business

Local users can trigger kernel crashes on systems using the ocfs2 filesystem, causing denial of service and potential data corruption or service outages on affected Linux deployments.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access repeatedly issues OCFS2_IOC_GROUP_ADD ioctls that fail verification in ocfs2_verify_group_and_input, leaving the buffer cached; a follow-up call then hits the BUG assertion. Listed threat actors have targeted similar Linux kernel resource-handling flaws in espionage and financially motivated campaigns.

How to fix it

Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing the ocfs2_remove_from_cache fix on the error path of ocfs2_group_add. For the listed qemu packages on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS apply 2.0.0+dfsg-2ubuntu1.22 or later.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm kernel version after update; attempt the previously failing ioctl sequence and verify absence of the BUG at fs/ocfs2/uptodate.c:509; inspect dmesg for related ocfs2 errors.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local shell or process execution on target system
  2. Open an ocfs2 filesystem handle
  3. Issue failing OCFS2_IOC_GROUP_ADD ioctl for a chosen inode
  4. Repeat the ioctl to trigger the cached-buffer BUG

How to detect it

Search kernel logs and dmesg for 'kernel BUG at fs/ocfs2/uptodate.c:509' and 'ocfs2_set_new_buffer_uptodate'; correlate with audit records of OCFS2_IOC_GROUP_ADD ioctls from untrusted processes.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel updates on any systems mounting ocfs2 volumes
  • Restrict unprivileged ioctl access to ocfs2 filesystems via AppArmor or SELinux policies where possible
  • Monitor for ocfs2 BUG reports in system logs and schedule patching before the CISA remediation window if applicable

Fix this by uncaching the buffer head with 'ocfs2_remove_from_cache()' on error path in 'ocfs2_group_add()'.
