What it actually does

Race condition between mutex_lock on queue->queue_lock in nvme_tcp_get_address and concurrent mutex_destroy in nvme_tcp_free_queue, triggering DEBUG_LOCKS_WARN_ON and kernel warnings during NVMe TCP address retrieval.

Why it matters to the business

Linux systems using NVMe over TCP storage may experience kernel warnings or instability during error recovery or device enumeration, potentially disrupting storage access and requiring reboots in affected environments.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access or control over NVMe TCP queue lifecycle events triggers concurrent queue destruction and address queries, hitting the unprotected mutex state after the prior commit introduced locking without proper ordering against free paths.

How to fix it

Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 4f946479b326a3cbb193f2b8368aed9269514c35 or later stable releases that resolve the nvme-tcp queue lock ordering issue.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify the running kernel contains the fix commit or is newer than the vulnerable versions; reproduce nvme_tcp_get_address and nvme_tcp_free_queue concurrency paths under lockdep to confirm absence of warnings.

Typical attack path

  1. Gain local execution or influence NVMe TCP device attachment/detachment sequences
  2. Trigger error recovery or sysfs address reads while queues are being freed
  3. Cause concurrent mutex operations leading to invalid lock state
  4. Observe kernel warning or potential follow-on instability

How to detect it

Review kernel logs for the specific mutex warning and nvme_tcp symbols during device operations; correlate with sysfs reads or error recovery events on NVMe TCP queues.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel updates on systems exposing NVMe TCP devices
  • Monitor for similar mutex ordering issues in storage drivers
  • Apply the specific commit 4f946479b326a3cbb193f2b8368aed9269514c35 where backports are available

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nvme: tcp: avoid race between queue_lock lock and destroy Commit 76d54bf20cdc ("nvme-tcp: don't access released socket during error recovery") added a mutex_lock() call for the queue->queue_lock in nvme_tcp_get_address(). However, the mutex_lock() races with mutex_destroy() in nvme_tcp_free_queue(), and causes the WARN below.
