What it actually does
Missing xa_destroy() call after xa_init_flags() in rpcrdma device lifecycle causes the xarray to retain allocated memory structures without release, leading to resource leakage.
Why it matters to the business
Over time, repeated device add/remove operations on systems using the affected code can exhaust kernel memory, degrading performance or causing service disruptions; the listed threat actor campaigns increase urgency for environments with high device churn despite low EPSS and no KEV listing.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker triggers repeated rpcrdma device initialization and removal paths (via network or local interfaces) to force xarray memory accrual without corresponding release; listed 2024 espionage and financially motivated campaigns, along with various Linux kernel out-of-bounds and uninitialized resource patterns, may chain this leak into broader memory pressure or follow-on corruption.
How to fix it
Update to fixed versions that include the xa_destroy() pairing; for flashplugin-nonfree on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS apply version 11.2.202.559ubuntu0.14.04.1 or later.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel source contains xa_destroy() in rpcrdma_remove_one() after the corresponding xa_init_flags(); inspect memory usage patterns post-device removal and verify no residual xarray allocations remain.
Typical attack path
- Identify systems exposing rpcrdma interfaces or allowing device hotplug operations
- Repeatedly exercise device add/remove sequences to trigger xa_init_flags without matching destroy
- Monitor for gradual kernel memory growth leading to exhaustion or instability
- Chain with other kernel flaws for privilege escalation or denial of service
How to detect it
Review kernel logs and memory accounting for repeated rpcrdma device operations without corresponding cleanup; correlate with threat actor TTPs around Linux kernel resource issues and check for unusual memory growth tied to network RDMA activity.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching affected kernels within 30 days given publication age and listed threat actor interest
- Audit environments for rpcrdma usage and monitor memory metrics during device lifecycle events
- Apply the exact fixed flashplugin-nonfree package version where that component is present
- Review downstream dependents for similar xarray lifecycle patterns
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: rpcrdma: Always release the rpcrdma_device's xa_array Dai pointed out that the xa_init_flags() in rpcrdma_add_one() needs to have a matching xa_destroy() in rpcrdma_remove_one() to release underlying memory that the xarray might have accrued during operation.
