What it actually does
Insufficient CSRF token validation in the message-sending endpoint allows forged cross-origin requests to send messages to arbitrary users including administrators.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers can cause unauthorized internal messages to be delivered, enabling social-engineering or follow-on attacks against privileged accounts with no external indicators of compromise.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker prepares a malicious web page that submits a crafted message-send request; when an authenticated victim visits the page, the request executes without proper token checks, delivering the message to the chosen recipient.
How to fix it
Upgrade ampache/ampache to the commit 312765c0cc5e12a4208b70d2739a021be144230d (version 7.0.1 equivalent) or later; no workarounds exist.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the deployed commit or version is at or after 312765c0cc5e12a4208b70d2739a021be144230d; re-test the message-send flow with cross-origin requests to verify token enforcement.
Typical attack path
- Identify message-send endpoint and observe absent or weak CSRF token checks
- Craft cross-origin HTML/JS payload that submits the message request
- Host or deliver the payload via phishing, compromised site, or third-party link
- Victim authenticates and visits the malicious page
- Forged request executes and message is delivered to target user
How to detect it
Inspect web-server and application logs for POST requests to the messaging endpoint that originate from unexpected referrers or lack valid session-bound tokens; correlate with sudden spikes in internal message creation.
What your security team should do
- Immediately schedule upgrade to the fixed commit across all instances
- Review application logs for anomalous internal message volume or recipients
- Educate administrators on recognizing unexpected internal messages
- Monitor upstream for any follow-on releases
The record
Ampache is a web based audio/video streaming application and file manager. The current implementation of token parsing does not adequately validate CSRF tokens when users send messages to one another. This vulnerability could be exploited to forge CSRF attacks, allowing an attacker to send messages to any user, including administrators, if they interact with a malicious request. This issue has been addressed in version 7.0.1 and all users are advised to upgrade. There are no known workarounds for this vulnerability.
