What it actually does
Missing error check after xa_store() in ksmbd allows failed XArray insertions (due to -EINVAL or -ENOMEM) to proceed without handling, leaving kernel data structures in inconsistent states that can trigger crashes, resource leaks, or invalid memory access.
Why it matters to the business
Unpatched Linux systems running ksmbd face elevated risk of kernel instability or crashes during SMB file sharing operations, especially under memory pressure, potentially causing service outages and requiring urgent kernel updates across server fleets.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker establishes an SMB session to a vulnerable ksmbd instance and crafts requests that force xa_store() to fail through memory exhaustion or invalid parameters; the unchecked failure leaves the XArray in a bad state that the attacker then triggers via subsequent operations to induce denial of service or escalate privileges.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to commit df0cc57e057f18e44dac8e6c18aba47ab53202f9 or later; rebuild and deploy the fixed kernel image, then reboot affected systems. Disable ksmbd if SMB server functionality is not required.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains commit df0cc57e057f18e44dac8e6c18aba47ab53202f9 by inspecting /proc/version or kernel build logs; attempt to reproduce xa_store failure conditions in a test environment and verify error paths are now handled.
Typical attack path
- Connect to ksmbd over SMB3
- Send crafted requests designed to exhaust memory or supply invalid keys during XArray operations
- Trigger code paths that call xa_store() without subsequent error handling
- Follow up with operations that dereference the inconsistent XArray state to crash the kernel or gain elevated access
How to detect it
Inspect kernel logs (dmesg, /var/log/kern.log) for ksmbd-related warnings or oops messages around xa_store calls; correlate with SMB connection logs showing unusual session or file operation patterns that precede crashes.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrade to the fixed commit on all systems exposing ksmbd
- Review ksmbd usage and disable the module where SMB server capability is unnecessary
- Monitor for kernel oops or panic logs related to ksmbd XArray operations
- Apply the update before the next scheduled maintenance window given the kernel-wide exposure
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ksmbd: Fix the missing xa_store error check xa_store() can fail, it return xa_err(-EINVAL) if the entry cannot be stored in an XArray, or xa_err(-ENOMEM) if memory allocation failed, so check error for xa_store() to fix it.
