What it actually does
Double invocation of ocfs2_xa_remove_entry after an ENOMEM failure in ocfs2_xa_value_truncate causes a null pointer dereference in ocfs2_xa_block_wipe_namevalue during xattr removal on OCFS2.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel crashes or denial of service possible on systems using the OCFS2 filesystem when extended attributes are modified under memory pressure; low EPSS and absence from KEV indicate limited real-world exploitation urgency despite listed general Linux kernel threat actor campaigns.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker triggers the flaw via fault injection or crafted xattr operations that force ocfs2_xa_cleanup_value_truncate to remove the entry, after which the erroneous return path in ocfs2_xa_remove performs the removal a second time, dereferencing a null pointer; general Linux kernel exploitation campaigns by espionage and financially motivated actors provide context but no specific actors tied to this CVE.
How to fix it
Apply the upstream kernel fix that skips the second removal and returns early after ocfs2_xa_cleanup_value_truncate; upgrade affected packages to the listed fixed versions such as flashplugin-nonfree 11.2.202.554ubuntu0.14.04.1 where applicable, or equivalent patched kernel builds.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel source contains the corrected control flow that avoids the second ocfs2_xa_remove_entry after cleanup; test with syzkaller-style reproducers that inject ENOMEM during xattr removal and verify absence of NULL dereference.
Typical attack path
- Mount or access an OCFS2 filesystem
- Perform xattr set or remove operations under memory pressure
- Force ENOMEM in ocfs2_xa_value_truncate via fault injection or resource exhaustion
- Trigger double ocfs2_xa_remove_entry call leading to null dereference in wipe_namevalue
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference with RIP in ocfs2_xa_block_wipe_namevalue and preceding ERROR messages from ocfs2_xa_remove and ocfs2_xa_cleanup_value_truncate; correlate with xattr operations on OCFS2 volumes.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on any systems running OCFS2 with xattr usage
- Monitor EPSS trend (stable at 0.0031) and re-evaluate if new exploit maturity emerges
- Disable unneeded xattr trusted namespaces on OCFS2 volumes as a defense-in-depth measure

In this case the comment mentions that we can return 0 if ocfs2_xa_cleanup_value_truncate() is going to wipe the entry anyway. But the following 'rc' check is wrong and execution flow do 'ocfs2_xa_remove_entry(loc);' twice: * 1st: in ocfs2_xa_cleanup_value_truncate(); * 2nd: returning back to ocfs2_xa_remove() instead of going to 'out'. Fix this by skipping the 2nd removal of the same entry and making syzkaller repro happy.
