A bug in some older Linux WiFi hardware drivers can prevent laptops from waking up properly from sleep, potentially causing crashes or lost work until fixed by a software update.

What it actually does

Race condition in iwlegacy driver where stale interrupts are not cleared before enabling interrupts during resume from hibernation, allowing interrupt handler restart work to conflict with resume initialization and cause hardware unavailability.

Why it matters to the business

Affected Linux systems using legacy Intel WiFi hardware may fail to resume from sleep or hibernation, leading to unexpected downtime, data loss risk during suspend cycles, and need for manual intervention or reboot; low prevalence limits widespread operational impact but creates reliability issues on older laptops.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access triggers a suspend/resume cycle on vulnerable hardware; stale interrupt state from prior activity races with resume path, queuing conflicting work that crashes the WiFi stack or marks hardware unavailable, with generic Linux kernel exploitation campaigns potentially leveraging similar uninitialized resource or access flaws for local privilege escalation.

How to fix it

Upgrade Linux kernel to commit 271d282ecc15d7012e71ca82c89a6c0e13a063dd or later stable release containing the iwlegacy stale interrupt clear fix; apply distribution backports for affected packages such as libemail-address-perl 1.912-1 where relevant.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm kernel version includes the referenced commit; test resume from hibernation on iwl4965 hardware and verify absence of ISR stale interrupt logs and START_ALIVE timeout warnings; inspect dmesg for successful il4965_mac_start without hardware restart requests.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local access to target system
  2. Trigger or wait for suspend/hibernation event
  3. Allow resume to begin without cleared interrupt state
  4. Exploit resulting race to destabilize WiFi driver and kernel
  5. Escalate via hardware unavailable state or related kernel panic

How to detect it

Search kernel logs for patterns like 'ISR inta', 'START_ALIVE timeout', 'Hardware became unavailable upon resume', and ieee80211_reconfig warnings; correlate with iwlegacy module activity around suspend/resume timestamps.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel updates on systems with legacy iwl4965/iwlegacy WiFi within 30 days given publication age
  • Disable WiFi or use alternative drivers on affected hardware until patched
  • Monitor for resume-related kernel warnings in production fleets
  • Review EPSS and threat actor mentions of similar Linux kernel flaws for broader exposure

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: iwlegacy: Clear stale interrupts before resuming device iwl4965 fails upon resume from hibernation on my laptop. The reason seems to be a stale interrupt which isn't being cleared out before interrupts are enabled. We end up with a race beween the resume trying to bring things back up, and the restart work (queued form the interrupt handler) trying to bring things down. Eventually the whole thing blows up. Fix the problem by clearing out any stale interrupts before interrupts get enabled during resume.
