What it actually does

Out-of-bounds write in GPU metrics table initialization: vangogh_tables_init allocates 152 bytes but smu_cmn_init_soft_gpu_metrics performs a 168-byte memset, causing slab-out-of-bounds in AMD Vangogh PM code path.

Why it matters to the business

Kernel memory corruption risk on Linux systems using affected AMD GPUs, potentially causing crashes, denial of service, or local privilege escalation; low EPSS indicates limited in-the-wild exploitation but still requires patching for production kernels.

How an attack unfolds

Local attacker triggers GPU metrics retrieval via sysfs (amdgpu_get_gpu_metrics), reaching vangogh_get_gpu_metrics_v2_4 and the oversized memset; listed in broad Linux kernel out-of-bounds write campaigns by espionage and financially motivated actors though no specific named APT confirmed for this CVE.

How to fix it

Upgrade to kernel containing commit f111de0f010308949254ee1cc45df8e6b8e1d7d4 or later; rebuild and reboot with the patched amdgpu driver; for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS rails packages apply version 2:4.2.6-1 or newer equivalent stable kernel update.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm kernel build includes the allocation size fix in vangogh_init_smc_tables; reproduce metrics read without KASAN slab-out-of-bounds reports; verify table size matches or exceeds 168 bytes in driver initialization logs.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local unprivileged access on affected Linux system with Vangogh AMD GPU
  2. Interact with amdgpu sysfs GPU metrics attribute
  3. Invoke code path through amdgpu_dpm_get_gpu_metrics to smu_cmn_init_soft_gpu_metrics
  4. Trigger 168-byte memset against undersized 152-byte allocation
  5. Exploit resulting slab corruption for kernel code execution or crash

How to detect it

Search kernel logs and dmesg for KASAN reports citing slab-out-of-bounds in smu_cmn_init_soft_gpu_metrics combined with amdgpu call stack; inspect task names like mangoapp and CPU context during GPU metrics reads.

  • BUG: KASAN: slab-out-of-bounds in smu_cmn_init_soft_gpu_metrics+0x73/0x200 [amdgpu]
  • Write of size 168 at addr
  • vangogh_get_gpu_metrics_v2_4+0x123/0xad0 [amdgpu]
  • Allocated by task.*vangogh_init_smc_tables

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel upgrade on all AMD Vangogh GPU hosts within standard patch windows given low EPSS
  • Enable KASAN or similar memory debugging on test systems to validate exposure
  • Monitor amdgpu driver load and sysfs GPU metrics access in production logs
  • Review downstream dependents of the linux.git stable tree for backport needs

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/amd/pm: Vangogh: Fix kernel memory out of bounds write KASAN reports that the GPU metrics table allocated in vangogh_tables_init() is not large enough for the memset done in smu_cmn_init_soft_gpu_metrics(). Root cause appears that when GPU metrics tables for v2_4 parts were added it was not considered to enlarge the table to fit. The fix in this patch is rather "brute force" and perhaps later should be done in a smarter way, by extracting and consolidating the part version to size logic to a common helper, instead of brute forcing the largest possible allocation. Nevertheless, for now this works and fixes the out of bounds write. v2: * Drop impossible v3_0 case. (Mario) (cherry picked from commit 0880f58f9609f0200483a49429af0f050d281703)
