What it actually does
The flaw in virtio_pmem allows a device in non-activated status to cause virtio_pmem_flush to block indefinitely awaiting host acknowledgment, resulting in a kernel-level hang.
Why it matters to the business
Virtualized systems relying on persistent memory devices may experience complete unavailability, leading to service disruption and operational downtime until reboot or manual intervention.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access or control over the virtio device state places the pmem device into a bad status and then triggers a flush operation, causing the guest kernel to hang; no widespread exploitation by named actors has been observed despite general Linux kernel interest from espionage and financially motivated groups.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to the fixed commit 59ac565c6277d4be6661e81ea6a7f3ca2c5e4e36 or later stable releases that include the status check before flush; apply available package updates for affected distributions.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel contains the status check at the start of virtio_pmem_flush and confirm the device reports activated status before flush requests are issued.
Typical attack path
- Gain access to a system using virtio_pmem devices
- Manipulate the device into a non-activated status
- Invoke a flush operation that enters virtio_pmem_flush
- Observe indefinite wait causing system hang
How to detect it
Review kernel logs and dmesg output for repeated virtio_pmem flush attempts or device status errors indicating non-activated state; correlate with system hang events in uptime or systemd logs.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all systems exposing virtio_pmem devices
- Test updates in staging environments to avoid introducing new stability issues
- Monitor kernel logs for virtio device status warnings during normal operation
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: virtio_pmem: Check device status before requesting flush If a pmem device is in a bad status, the driver side could wait for host ack forever in virtio_pmem_flush(), causing the system to hang. So add a status check in the beginning of virtio_pmem_flush() to return early if the device is not activated.
