What it actually does
The nsim_dev_trap_report_work() function in netdevsim can execute for extended periods without yielding the CPU when handling large numbers of ports, leading to soft lockups or hung tasks due to missing cond_resched() calls and use of the default system_wq.
Why it matters to the business
Systems running affected kernel versions may experience temporary unresponsiveness or require manual intervention during high-load simulation scenarios, increasing operational overhead for environments relying on netdevsim for testing or development.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker or fuzzer triggers repeated trap report events across many simulated ports, causing the workqueue task to hold execution context without rescheduling; combined with the default workqueue this leads to prolonged blocking as seen in syzbot reports, potentially amplified by threat actors targeting Linux kernel resource handling flaws.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to version 6.1.115 or later where the fix replaces implicit system_wq usage with system_unbound_wq and adds cond_resched() in nsim_dev_trap_report_work(). For listed SUSE distributions apply the referenced pcre package updates if applicable to your environment.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel version meets or exceeds 6.1.115; review dmesg or workqueue logs for absence of nsim_dev_trap_report_work related hung task warnings after applying the change; test with high-port-count netdevsim configurations.
Typical attack path
- Identify or create a netdevsim device instance
- Generate a high volume of trap report events via hundreds of ports
- Observe or trigger the nsim_dev_trap_report_work() execution on system_wq
- Cause sustained CPU contention leading to task blocking beyond hung task thresholds
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for hung task warnings referencing nsim_dev_trap_report_work or events workqueue; check for prolonged execution of kworker threads tied to netdevsim; correlate with fuzzer or test harness activity that spawns many ports.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrades on any systems exposing netdevsim interfaces
- Monitor for kernel updates in your distribution's security advisories
- Limit use of netdevsim to non-production environments until patched
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netdevsim: use cond_resched() in nsim_dev_trap_report_work() I am still seeing many syzbot reports hinting that syzbot might fool nsim_dev_trap_report_work() with hundreds of ports [1] Lets use cond_resched(), and system_unbound_wq instead of implicit system_wq.
