What it actually does
Uninitialized command bitmask for MANAGE_PAGES allows mlx5_cmd_trigger_completions to perform a null pointer dereference during health error handling before any MANAGE_PAGES command has executed.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel crashes on systems using mlx5 network adapters can cause sudden loss of network connectivity and require manual intervention or reboot, increasing downtime for servers and workloads relying on these devices.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker or faulty condition triggers a firmware health error (for example during mlx5_enable_hca) before any MANAGE_PAGES command runs; mlx5_cmd_flush then calls mlx5_cmd_trigger_completions which dereferences an uninitialized pointer, resulting in a kernel panic.
How to fix it
Update to a Linux kernel containing the fix for command bitmask initialization. Reboot systems after applying the updated kernel package.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed kernel version contains the corrected bitmask initialization logic and that no null-ptr-deref occurs in mlx5_cmd_trigger_completions during simulated health error paths.
Typical attack path
- Trigger mlx5 device initialization or firmware error path before MANAGE_PAGES is issued
- Cause entry into error state via mlx5_fw_fatal_reporter_err_work
- mlx5_cmd_flush invokes mlx5_cmd_trigger_completions for MANAGE_PAGES
- Null pointer dereference occurs leading to kernel panic
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for KASAN null-ptr-deref reports mentioning mlx5_cmd_trigger_completions and mlx5_health workqueue entries; look for crashes occurring during device initialization or firmware error handling.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all systems containing mlx5 hardware
- Monitor for kernel oops or panic logs containing mlx5_cmd_trigger_completions
- Test updated kernels in staging environments before broad deployment
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net/mlx5: Fix command bitmask initialization Command bitmask have a dedicated bit for MANAGE_PAGES command, this bit isn't Initialize during command bitmask Initialization, only during MANAGE_PAGES. In addition, mlx5_cmd_trigger_completions() is trying to trigger completion for MANAGE_PAGES command as well. Hence, in case health error occurred before any MANAGE_PAGES command have been invoke (for example, during mlx5_enable_hca()), mlx5_cmd_trigger_completions() will try to trigger completion for MANAGE_PAGES command, which will result in null-ptr-deref error.[1] Fix it by Initialize command bitmask correctly. While at it, re-write the code for better understanding.
