What it actually does
NULL pointer dereference in mlx5e_remove when mlx5e_netdev_change_profile leaves the netdev profile set to NULL after a failed rollback triggered by mlx5e_priv_init failure (e.g., interrupted workqueue creation returning -ENOMEM or -EINTR).
Why it matters to the business
Kernel panic and system crash during driver unload or module removal on affected Linux systems, causing unplanned downtime and potential loss of network connectivity for mlx5 devices.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker or tester interrupts modprobe or driver initialization (e.g., via signal), causing wq rescuer thread creation to fail; mlx5e_priv_init converts this to ENOMEM, profile rollback also fails leaving profile NULL, and subsequent _mlx5e_remove dereferences the NULL profile pointer leading to BUG.
How to fix it
Update to a Linux kernel containing the fix for CVE-2024-50146 that avoids calling profile->cleanup when rollback fails; apply vendor kernel updates for affected distributions.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel version includes the patch preventing NULL profile dereference; reproduce the original failure scenario (interrupted modprobe) and verify no crash occurs on unload; inspect dmesg for absence of the reported NULL pointer BUG.
Typical attack path
- Trigger mlx5e_netdev_change_profile via driver load or profile switch
- Interrupt workqueue creation in mlx5e_priv_init (signal or resource exhaustion)
- Force rollback failure leaving profile as NULL
- Initiate driver removal path (_mlx5e_remove or mlx5_unregister_device)
- Trigger NULL dereference and kernel oops
How to detect it
Search kernel logs for "BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference" combined with mlx5e_remove or mlx5_unregister_device call traces; look for preceding messages about failed wq rescuer creation and profile rollback errors with -12.
- mlx5e_netdev_change_profile: failed to rollback to orig profile, -12
- BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 0000000000000008
- mlx5e_remove+0x6b/0xb0 [mlx5_core]
- workqueue: Failed to create a rescuer kthread for wq "mlx5e"
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on systems using mlx5/mlx5e drivers
- Monitor for kernel oops during driver unload or module removal
- Test driver load/unload sequences under signal interruption in staging environments
- Review EPSS and threat actor reports for any increase in in-the-wild exploitation
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net/mlx5e: Don't call cleanup on profile rollback failure When profile rollback fails in mlx5e_netdev_change_profile, the netdev profile var is left set to NULL. Avoid a crash when unloading the driver by not calling profile->cleanup in such a case. This was encountered while testing, with the original trigger that the wq rescuer thread creation got interrupted (presumably due to Ctrl+C-ing modprobe), which gets converted to ENOMEM (-12) by mlx5e_priv_init, the profile rollback also fails for the same reason (signal still active) so the profile is left as NULL, leading to a crash later in _mlx5e_remove.
