What it actually does
The flaw is a buffer overflow in Linux kernel tracing event validation: strlen() reports length excluding the null byte, so a string exactly matching the maximum buffer length leaves no room for the required NULL terminator, allowing overflow of the event buffer.
Why it matters to the business
Local attackers can crash the kernel or potentially execute arbitrary code on Linux systems, leading to denial of service, data corruption, or full host compromise; the issue affects widely deployed kernel versions and requires prompt patching across server and endpoint fleets.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access crafts a tracing event whose payload string is exactly the maximum allowed length (no trailing null), passes the flawed length check, and triggers an out-of-bounds write during buffer handling. Listed threat actors have demonstrated similar Linux kernel out-of-bounds write and uninitialized-resource patterns in espionage and financially motivated campaigns.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to the commit 5e3231b352725ff4a3a0095e6035af674f2d8725 or later stable releases that include the length-validation fix; rebuild and reboot all affected systems; apply vendor-supplied updates as soon as available.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains commit 5e3231b352725ff4a3a0095e6035af674f2d8725 (or equivalent backport) via uname -r and git log, or verify the strlen-plus-null check is present in the tracing event code path; re-test with a maximum-length event string to ensure rejection occurs.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local user or container access on a vulnerable Linux host
- Load or interact with the tracing subsystem to register a custom event
- Supply a string payload whose strlen exactly equals the buffer size limit
- Trigger event processing to cause the missing-null-byte overflow
- Leverage the resulting memory corruption for crash, information leak, or code execution
How to detect it
Review kernel logs (dmesg, /var/log/kern.log) for oops or panic messages referencing tracing event buffers; inspect auditd or eBPF traces for unusual event-registration calls with maximum-length strings; correlate with process creation of tracing tools around the time of any kernel faults.
What your security team should do
- Immediately inventory all Linux kernel versions and schedule upgrades to the fixed commit
- Prioritize production and internet-facing systems given the 7.8 CVSS and local-attack surface
- Monitor EPSS and threat-intel feeds for any rise in public exploits or ransomware usage
- Harden tracing permissions and consider disabling unneeded event sources until patched
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: tracing: Consider the NULL character when validating the event length strlen() returns a string length excluding the null byte. If the string length equals to the maximum buffer length, the buffer will have no space for the NULL terminating character. This commit checks this condition and returns failure for it.
