Schedule a fix SSVC: Track

A flaw in the Linux kernel's handling of certain network messages could let an attacker read memory they should not, potentially crashing the system or exposing sensitive data.

What it actually does

Incorrect maxtype assignment in wwan_rtnl_link_ops causes global out-of-bounds read during netlink attribute parsing in validate_nla when handling RTM_NEWLINK messages for WWAN interfaces.

Why it matters to the business

Kernel memory corruption risk on systems using WWAN networking can lead to crashes, information leaks, or potential privilege escalation, affecting device stability and requiring urgent patching on affected Linux distributions.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker sends a crafted netlink message with nested attributes that exceed the declared policy size; the kernel's nla_parse_nested_deprecated then reads past the end of wwan_rtnl_policy, triggering the out-of-bounds access that was previously seen in similar rmnet and other netlink policy bugs.

How to fix it

Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing the fix that replaces the oversized maxtype with IFLA_WWAN_MAX; apply vendor backports for supported distributions. No user-space configuration changes are required.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm kernel version contains commit that corrects wwan_rtnl_policy maxtype; run syzkaller or similar netlink fuzzing targeting rtnl_newlink with WWAN family to verify absence of the KASAN report; check /proc/kallsyms or source for correct IFLA_WWAN_MAX usage.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local or network-adjacent access to a system with WWAN kernel support enabled
  2. Craft and send a malicious RTM_NEWLINK netlink message containing oversized nested attributes
  3. Trigger rtnl_newlink path to invoke __nla_validate_parse on the oversized policy
  4. Read kernel memory beyond wwan_rtnl_policy boundary via KASAN-detectable global OOB

How to detect it

Review kernel logs for KASAN reports referencing validate_nla and wwan_rtnl_policy; inspect netlink audit logs or system call traces for unusual RTM_NEWLINK activity from untrusted processes; no persistent file or network IOCs are produced by the flaw itself.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel updates on all systems exposing netlink interfaces or using WWAN drivers
  • Monitor vendor advisories for backported fixes and schedule immediate deployment
  • Restrict unprivileged netlink access via SELinux or AppArmor where feasible until patched
