What it actually does
Missing RCU read-side critical section in taprio_dump() allows use-after-free when a qdisc is freed via taprio_free_sched_cb during concurrent netlink operations, resulting in reads of freed slab memory.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using taprio qdisc for time-aware traffic scheduling face risk of kernel crashes or memory corruption that can lead to denial of service or potential privilege escalation on affected Linux kernels.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker sends crafted netlink messages via rtnetlink to create or modify a taprio qdisc, then triggers a dump operation that races with RCU grace period freeing of the scheduler structure, causing the use-after-free.
How to fix it
Apply the upstream fix in commit b911fa9e92ee586e36479ad57b88f20471acaca1 or later stable kernels; rebuild and reboot with the patched kernel; for distributions, install the corresponding security update when available.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the kernel source contains the RCU read-lock around the taprio dump logic or confirm the git commit is present; test by reproducing the syzkaller reproducer under KASAN to ensure no slab-use-after-free is reported.
Typical attack path
- Send netlink RTM_NEWQDISC or RTM_GETQDISC message targeting taprio
- Trigger concurrent qdisc modification or deletion to schedule RCU free
- Invoke qdisc dump path that reads the now-freed structure
- Leverage use-after-free for memory corruption or information leak
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and KASAN reports for 'taprio_dump' combined with 'slab-use-after-free' or 'BUG: KASAN'; inspect netlink traffic to rtnetlink for repeated qdisc modification patterns preceding crashes.
- taprio_dump+0xa0c/0xbb0
- BUG: KASAN: slab-use-after-free in taprio_dump
- tc_modify_qdisc.*taprio
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on systems exposing taprio qdisc configurations
- Restrict unprivileged netlink access where possible until patched
- Monitor kernel crash logs for taprio_dump related faults
