What it actually does
The RDMA MAD agent timeout handler acquires and releases the mad_agent_priv lock for every timed-out work request instead of batching them, causing lock contention that manifests as soft lockups when many WRs must be processed.
Why it matters to the business
RDMA-based connection establishment between nodes can trigger prolonged CPU soft lockups, leading to system unresponsiveness and disruption of high-performance networking or clustered workloads; no ransomware or KEV usage observed.
How an attack unfolds
A local workload or attacker generates a large number of timed-out work requests on the RDMA MAD agent (commonly via rdma-cm path); the contended per-WR locking inside timeout_sends causes the soft lockup observed in ib_core and ib_cm call paths.
How to fix it
Apply the upstream fix that builds a local list of timed-out WRs under a single lock acquisition before invoking the send handler; update to a patched Linux kernel release containing commit resolving RDMA/mad timeout handling.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the kernel contains the batched-list timeout handler change; reproduce high-WR timeout load and verify absence of soft lockup traces involving timeout_sends and _raw_spin_unlock_irq.
Typical attack path
- Establish RDMA connection that produces many work requests
- Force or wait for a burst of timed-out WRs
- Timeout handler in ib_core runs under per-WR lock acquisition
- Lock contention escalates into soft lockup on the CPU
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and crash dumps for soft lockup reports containing kworker entries for ib_mad1, timeout_sends from ib_core, and cm_process_send_error from ib_cm; correlate with RDMA connection activity.
- BUG: soft lockup - CPU
- Workqueue: ib_mad1 timeout_sends [ib_core]
- cm_process_send_error+0x122/0x1d0 [ib_cm]
- timeout_sends+0x1dd/0x270 [ib_core]
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on systems using RDMA or rdma-cm
- Monitor kernel logs for soft lockup signatures on ib_mad1 workqueue
- Test patched kernels under representative RDMA connection loads before broad deployment
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: RDMA/mad: Improve handling of timed out WRs of mad agent Current timeout handler of mad agent acquires/releases mad_agent_priv lock for every timed out WRs. This causes heavy locking contention when higher no. of WRs are to be handled inside timeout handler. This leads to softlockup with below trace in some use cases where rdma-cm path is used to establish connection between peer nodes Trace: ----- BUG: soft lockup - CPU#4 stuck for 26s!
