What it actually does
Missing vcap_free_rule() calls after kmalloc allocations for rule structures, keys, and actions inside the kunit test function vcap_api_encode_rule_test() cause unreleased kernel memory objects.
Why it matters to the business
Test runs on affected kernel builds can gradually exhaust memory, slowing or crashing CI/CD pipelines and development systems; the issue is confined to non-production test code so operational Linux deployments face negligible direct risk.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with the ability to trigger the specific kunit test case (normally only during kernel development or testing) can cause repeated allocations without corresponding frees, leading to memory leaks; no remote or production exploitation path exists because the vulnerable code runs only under controlled test conditions.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to commit 98f7e32f20d28ec452afb208f9cffc08448a2652 or later; rebuild and redeploy any custom kernels used for testing that include the VCAP kunit suite.
How to confirm the fix worked
Run kmemleak or a similar kernel memory-leak detector while executing the vcap kunit tests and confirm that the previously reported unreferenced objects no longer appear; verify the presence of the vcap_free_rule() calls in the patched source.
Typical attack path
- Compile or load a kernel containing the unfixed vcap_api_encode_rule_test() function
- Execute the kunit test that exercises vcap_alloc_rule, vcap_rule_add_key, and vcap_rule_add_action
- Observe repeated kmalloc allocations without matching vcap_free_rule calls
- Monitor for gradual memory growth until the test environment OOMs
How to detect it
Inspect kernel build logs and CI output for kmemleak reports listing objects allocated from vcap_alloc_rule, vcap_rule_add_key, or vcap_rule_add_action inside vcap_api_encode_rule_test; no production-system indicators exist.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrades for all development and CI systems that build or run VCAP kunit tests
- Add kernel memory-leak scanning to automated test pipelines that exercise net/microchip/vcap code
- Monitor upstream stable kernel releases for any backports of the fix
