What it actually does
Race condition in blk-mq initialization allows cpuhp handler to dereference q->tag_set before it is assigned, triggering kernel oops.
Why it matters to the business
Local or triggered kernel crashes can cause system instability, unexpected reboots, and denial of service on affected Linux distributions and embedded devices.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access or the ability to trigger queue setup and CPU hotplug events concurrently can hit the window where the cpuhp handler runs before tag_set assignment, causing the oops.
How to fix it
Update to a kernel containing commit 73d964ce4bc8b4de88a7c2e40df494f0d5cd8950 or later. For affected Ubuntu packages apply the listed fixed versions such as 3.4.2-3ubuntu0.1~esm1 or 3.4.2-5.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify kernel source contains the reordering of tag_set assignment before hctx initialization; confirm running kernel version matches or exceeds the fixed package or commit listed for each distribution.
Typical attack path
- Trigger block device queue initialization
- Induce concurrent CPU hotplug event
- Force cpuhp handler execution before tag_set setup completes
- Dereference uninitialized pointer resulting in kernel oops
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for oops or panic entries referencing blk-mq, cpuhp, or tag_set around the time of suspected exploitation; correlate with block device attach or CPU hotplug events.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching production kernels that expose block multiqueue devices
- Reboot systems after applying updated kernels to activate fixes
- Monitor for oops reports in dmesg or kernel logs on systems that cannot be immediately updated
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: blk-mq: setup queue ->tag_set before initializing hctx Commit 7b815817aa58 ("blk-mq: add helper for checking if one CPU is mapped to specified hctx") needs to check queue mapping via tag set in hctx's cpuhp handler. However, q->tag_set may not be setup yet when the cpuhp handler is enabled, then kernel oops is triggered. Fix the issue by setup queue tag_set before initializing hctx.
