What it actually does
Missing iso_exit() call on Bluetooth module unload leaves the struct proto registered via proto_register() in an invalid state, triggering list corruption and kernel BUG on subsequent loads or use under hardened configs.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel panics and system instability when reloading Bluetooth modules, disrupting wireless connectivity and requiring reboots on affected Linux systems.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker unloads then reloads the Bluetooth module to hit the invalid proto state; under CONFIG_LIST_HARDENED the kernel panics on list_add validation during proto_register inside hci_sock_init.
How to fix it
Upgrade Linux kernel to commit 4af7ba39a1a02e16ee8cd0d3b6c6657f51b8ad7a or apply Ubuntu package updates such as 1:2014.1.5-0ubuntu1.1 for glance on 14.04 LTS and 2:11.0.0-0ubuntu1 for 16.04 LTS.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm iso_exit() is invoked on module exit, then repeatedly unload/reload the bluetooth module while monitoring for list corruption BUGs.
Typical attack path
- Unload bluetooth kernel module
- Reload bluetooth kernel module
- Trigger proto_register path leading to corrupted list_add
How to detect it
Search kernel logs for list_add corruption messages referencing lib/list_debug.c during bluetooth module initialization or proto_register calls.
- list_add corruption. next->prev should be prev
- kernel BUG at lib/list_debug.c:29
- __list_add_valid_or_report+0x61/0xa0
- proto_register+0x299/0x320
What your security team should do
- Apply kernel updates to fixed versions without delay
- Audit systems for repeated Bluetooth module load/unload patterns
- Enable kernel hardening configs only after patching
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: Bluetooth: Call iso_exit() on module unload If iso_init() has been called, iso_exit() must be called on module unload. Without that, the struct proto that iso_init() registered with proto_register() becomes invalid, which could cause unpredictable problems later. In my case, with CONFIG_LIST_HARDENED and CONFIG_BUG_ON_DATA_CORRUPTION enabled, loading the module again usually triggers this BUG(): list_add corruption. next->prev should be prev (ffffffffb5355fd0), but was 0000000000000068.
