What it actually does
Directory traversal flaw in Pagure allows a crafted git repository submission to read arbitrary files outside the intended repository scope, exposing server secrets and configuration data.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers may obtain credentials or configuration details that enable further unauthorized access; low exploitation probability and absence from known campaigns reduce immediate operational urgency but still require patching of the affected package.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts a git repository containing path traversal sequences, submits it to a Pagure instance for processing, and the server follows the malicious paths during repository handling to leak files containing secrets.
How to fix it
Upgrade python-min (Bitnami) to version 3.6.13 or later; restrict repository import sources and apply least-privilege file access controls on the server until the update is applied.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed package version meets or exceeds 3.6.13; attempt controlled traversal submissions in a test environment and verify that file reads are confined to the repository directory.
Typical attack path
- Create a git repository embedding directory traversal sequences in file paths or references
- Submit the repository to the Pagure server via push or import
- Trigger repository processing or indexing on the server
- Observe responses or side effects that disclose contents of traversed files
How to detect it
Inspect web and application logs for repository submissions containing unusual path sequences; review file access logs for reads outside expected repository directories during import or indexing operations.
What your security team should do
- Apply the 3.6.13 update to python-min (Bitnami) at the earliest maintenance window
- Review and harden git repository ingestion controls to limit untrusted submissions
- Monitor application and system logs for anomalous file access patterns during repository handling
The record
A directory traversal vulnerability was discovered in Pagure server. If a malicious user submits a specially cratfted git repository they could discover secrets on the server.
