What it actually does
In the Linux kernel RISC-V KVM subsystem, kvm_pmu_clear_snapshot_area() calls kvm_vcpu_write_guest() to zero the PMU snapshot area during VCPU teardown or snapshot area change; when the area has already been freed this triggers a NULL pointer dereference in __kvm_write_guest_page.
Why it matters to the business
A privileged guest or host administrator can trigger a kernel crash on VM destruction when SBI PMU snapshot is enabled, causing denial of service for virtualized workloads on RISC-V systems; high ecosystem prevalence of the Linux kernel amplifies the operational impact.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with the ability to start a guest that uses SBI PMU snapshot, then forces a power-off or performs a VCPU destroy sequence, causes kvm_riscv_vcpu_pmu_deinit to invoke the faulty clear path, resulting in the NULL dereference crash observed in kvm_vcpu_write_guest.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to the fixed commit 81aa95fd5bd14ff49617f07fa79a8d1f1cf2ce9a or later stable release containing the patch that removes the zero-out operation from kvm_pmu_clear_snapshot_area.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains commit 81aa95fd5bd14ff49617f07fa79a8d1f1cf2ce9a; attempt guest creation with SBI PMU snapshot enabled followed by forced shutdown and verify no NULL dereference occurs.
Typical attack path
- Enable SBI PMU snapshot for a RISC-V KVM guest
- Trigger guest forceful power-off or VCPU destruction
- kvm_pmu_clear_snapshot_area attempts to zero the already-freed snapshot area
- kvm_vcpu_write_guest dereferences a NULL pointer and the kernel oopses
How to detect it
Search kernel logs for oops messages referencing __kvm_write_guest_page, kvm_pmu_clear_snapshot_area, and kvm_riscv_vcpu_pmu_deinit; correlate with guest power-off events when SBI PMU snapshot is active.
What your security team should do
- Apply the kernel update containing commit 81aa95fd5bd14ff49617f07fa79a8d1f1cf2ce9a on all RISC-V hosts immediately
- Disable SBI PMU snapshot for guests until the fix is deployed if the feature is not required
- Monitor for kernel oops reports containing __kvm_write_guest_page and kvm_pmu_clear_snapshot_area
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: RISC-V: KVM: Don't zero-out PMU snapshot area before freeing data With the latest Linux-6.11-rc3, the below NULL pointer crash is observed when SBI PMU snapshot is enabled for the guest and the guest is forcefully powered-off. To address the above issue, simplify the kvm_pmu_clear_snapshot_area() to not zero-out PMU snapshot area from kvm_pmu_clear_snapshot_area() because the guest is anyway being tore down. The kvm_pmu_clear_snapshot_area() is also called when guest changes PMU snapshot area of a VCPU but even in this case the previous PMU snaphsot area must not be zeroed-out because the guest might have reclaimed the pervious PMU snapshot area for some other purpose.
