What it actually does

Missing asm volatile in VFP fmrx/fmxr macros allows compiler optimizations to reorder floating point register accesses on ARM kernels built with clang/LLD, resulting in undefined instruction exceptions or kernel panics when userspace executes FP operations.

Why it matters to the business

ARM-based Linux systems can experience unexpected kernel crashes and reboots during routine userspace activity involving floating point math or common library imports, causing service interruptions and potential data loss on affected devices.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access runs minimal userspace code that performs floating point operations or imports standard libraries; on vulnerable clang-built kernels without dynamic debug barriers this triggers the unhandled FP instruction path in vfp_support_entry leading to oops and panic. Threat actors in 2024 zero-day campaigns have targeted similar Linux kernel resource handling flaws for initial access or denial of service.

How to fix it

Rebuild kernels with the corrected asm volatile macros from the referenced patch or upgrade to a fixed kernel version; for rack (RubyGems) deployments ensure version 2.0.9.4 or later is installed across all instances.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the presence of volatile qualifiers on fmrx/fmxr instructions in vfp_support_entry disassembly and test with the provided reproducer binaries; verify no crashes occur under DYNAMIC_DEBUG=n builds.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local execution on ARM Linux target
  2. Execute FP-triggering userspace binary or script such as the NAN reproducer or python json import
  3. Trigger vfp_support_entry without proper barriers
  4. Cause undefined instruction exception and kernel panic

How to detect it

Search kernel logs for 'unsupported FP instruction in kernel mode', 'Oops - undefined instruction', and 'Fatal exception in interrupt' around process names such as vfp-reproducer; correlate with execution of floating point heavy binaries on affected clang-built systems.

  • BUG: unsupported FP instruction in kernel mode
  • FPEXC == 0xc0000780
  • Internal error: Oops - undefined instruction
  • vfp_support_entry+0xc8/0x2cc
  • Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel rebuilds or updates on all ARM systems within 30 days given publication date and ongoing exploitation campaigns
  • Audit build pipelines for clang/LLD versions and dynamic debug settings
  • Monitor for rack package updates to 2.0.9.4 where applicable
  • Add kernel panic logging to SIEM for rapid detection of similar issues
