What it actually does
Incorrect band_idx assignment on non-DBDC mt7986 hardware with MT7975/MT7976 ONE_ADIE causes mt76_wcid_cleanup to dereference an invalid phys array entry, resulting in a level-1 translation fault and kernel oops during station state transitions.
Why it matters to the business
Affected wireless access points or routers experience unexpected kernel crashes and reboots when managing client connections, leading to service interruptions and requiring manual intervention or reboots on impacted Linux-based devices.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local or adjacent network access triggers station addition/removal operations (for example via hostapd or 802.11 management frames) that invoke mt76_sta_state and ultimately mt76_wcid_cleanup with a band_idx value that indexes outside the valid phys array on the affected hardware configuration.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to version 6.6.54 or later that contains the mt76_dev_phy() fix; rebuild and deploy the updated kernel image on all affected mt7986 platforms before the CISA deadline if applicable.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains commit that replaces direct phys array indexing with mt76_dev_phy(); reproduce a station state change under load and verify absence of the previous oops signature in dmesg.
Typical attack path
- Identify or control a station association on an mt7986 device running the vulnerable mt76 driver
- Cause sta_info_destroy_addr_bss or equivalent state transition that calls drv_sta_state
- Reach mt76_wcid_cleanup which performs the invalid phys[band_idx] dereference
- Trigger the kernel read of an unmapped address resulting in the oops and system instability
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for the exact oops string containing mt76_wcid_cleanup+0x84 and the virtual address 0000000000000024; correlate with hostapd or cfg80211 stack traces on mt7986 hardware.
- mt76_wcid_cleanup+0x84/0x22c [mt76]
- Unable to handle kernel read from unreadable memory at virtual address 0000000000000024
- ESR = 0x0000000096000005
- Internal error: Oops: 0000000096000005
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrade to 6.6.54+ on all mt7986/mt7915 devices within maintenance windows
- Monitor vendor firmware releases that backport the mt76 fix
- Temporarily restrict station management operations if immediate patching is not feasible
- Add kernel oops and mt76 module crash signatures to alerting rules
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: mt76: mt7915: fix oops on non-dbdc mt7986 mt7915_band_config() sets band_idx = 1 on the main phy for mt7986 with MT7975_ONE_ADIE or MT7976_ONE_ADIE. Commit 0335c034e726 ("wifi: mt76: fix race condition related to checking tx queue fill status") introduced a dereference of the phys array indirectly indexed by band_idx via wcid->phy_idx in mt76_wcid_cleanup().
