What it actually does

Race condition in Linux kernel CAN BCM socket handling where bo->bcm_proc_read is not cleared after remove_proc_entry in bcm_notify, leading to unnecessary second remove_proc_entry call on socket close in bcm_release and a kernel warning.

Why it matters to the business

Linux systems using CAN protocol may experience kernel warnings or instability when closing sockets, increasing operational risk and requiring urgent patching on affected kernels.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access creates a CAN BCM socket, issues connect to a device that gets unregistered, then closes the socket without a second connect; this leaves bcm_proc_read set and triggers the warning path during release. No widespread exploitation reported despite mentions of Linux kernel campaigns.

How to fix it

Update Linux kernel to commit d5226fa6dbae0569ee43ecfc08bdcd6770fc4755 or later equivalent stable release containing the fix for clearing bo->bcm_proc_read after remove_proc_entry.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm kernel version includes the referenced commit; test socket create/connect/close sequences under CAN BCM to ensure no warnings in bcm_release.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local access on Linux system with CAN BCM support
  2. Create BCM socket and connect to unregistered device
  3. Close socket without reconnect
  4. Trigger bcm_release to invoke remove_proc_entry twice

How to detect it

Review kernel logs for warnings at fs/proc/generic.c mentioning remove_proc_entry and bcm_release; inspect CAN BCM socket usage patterns in system call traces.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel upgrades to fixed commit on all CAN-enabled systems
  • Monitor for kernel warnings related to proc generic remove_proc_entry
  • Apply updates within standard patching windows given low EPSS and no KEV status

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: can: bcm: Clear bo->bcm_proc_read after remove_proc_entry(). syzbot reported a warning in bcm_release(). [0] The blamed change fixed another warning that is triggered when connect() is issued again for a socket whose connect()ed device has been unregistered. However, if the socket is just close()d without the 2nd connect(), the remaining bo->bcm_proc_read triggers unnecessary remove_proc_entry() in bcm_release(). Let's clear bo->bcm_proc_read after remove_proc_entry() in bcm_notify().
