What it actually does
Null pointer dereference in module_add_driver() when kasprintf() fails to allocate driver_name during driver registration, causing subsequent sysfs_remove_link() to invoke kernfs_name_hash() and strlen() on a NULL pointer, resulting in a kernel oops and panic.
Why it matters to the business
Systems may experience unexpected crashes or reboots during hardware driver initialization or module loading, leading to downtime and potential loss of availability on Linux-based servers, embedded devices, or cloud instances; widespread kernel deployment increases exposure across many environments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access triggers the vulnerable code path by loading a module such as of_fpga_region under memory pressure that causes kasprintf() to fail; the flawed exit path then dereferences NULL during sysfs cleanup, crashing the kernel. Threat actors in espionage or financially motivated campaigns could combine this with other kernel issues for denial of service or to mask further activity.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to the fixed commit 0c3836482481200ead7b416ca80c68a29cfdaabd or later stable releases that correct the exit path ordering in module_add_driver(); rebuild and deploy updated kernel packages across all affected systems.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel contains commit 0c3836482481200ead7b416ca80c68a29cfdaabd; attempt to reproduce the fault injection scenario with of-fpga-region probing under low-memory conditions and confirm absence of the NULL dereference oops.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local execution or module loading privileges on a vulnerable Linux kernel
- Induce memory allocation failure during driver probe (e.g., of-fpga-region)
- Trigger module_add_driver() failure path leading to NULL driver_name
- Invoke sysfs_remove_link() which calls into kernfs_name_hash() on NULL
- Cause kernel panic via strlen() dereference
How to detect it
Inspect kernel logs for oops or panic messages containing strlen, kernfs_name_hash, sysfs_remove_link, module_add_driver, and of_fpga_region; correlate with modprobe or finit_module syscalls under memory-constrained conditions.

What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates to the listed fixed commit on all production Linux systems
- Monitor for driver loading events involving FPGA or platform drivers
- Apply memory pressure testing in staging environments to validate the fix
- Review module loading policies to limit unprivileged modprobe execution where feasible
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: driver core: Fix a potential null-ptr-deref in module_add_driver() Inject fault while probing of-fpga-region, if kasprintf() fails in module_add_driver(), the second sysfs_remove_link() in exit path will cause null-ptr-deref as below because kernfs_name_hash() will call strlen() with NULL driver_name. Fix it by releasing resources based on the exit path sequence.
