What it actually does
The flaw triggers a warning in iwl_trans_wait_tx_queues_empty() when the WiFi firmware is declared dead because the driver still attempts to wait for TX queues to empty instead of skipping that call while preserving unrelated flush maintenance.
Why it matters to the business
Wireless networking on affected Linux systems can become unstable or produce kernel warnings after firmware failures, increasing operational risk for organizations relying on Intel WiFi hardware in servers or endpoints; high ecosystem prevalence in the Linux kernel amplifies exposure across many distributions.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker triggers firmware death through normal error conditions or crafted wireless traffic, then induces a TX queue flush path that calls the wait function on a dead firmware instance, surfacing the warning; listed threat actors in 2024 zero-day and Linux kernel campaigns could chain this for denial-of-service during espionage or financially motivated operations.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a fixed version such as 4.19.323 or apply the commit ad2fcc2daa203a6ad491f00e9ae3b7867e8fe0f3; for github.com/hashicorp/consul update to 1.6.10 if used in combination; test wireless functionality post-upgrade and monitor for firmware-related errors.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel contains the fix commit or is at least version 4.19.323; reproduce firmware death scenarios in a test environment and confirm no warning is emitted from iwl_trans_wait_tx_queues_empty().
Typical attack path
- Cause or observe Intel WiFi firmware death state
- Trigger TX queue flush or related maintenance functions
- Observe warning or potential instability from waiting on dead firmware
- Leverage resulting disruption for follow-on activity
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for warnings originating from iwl_trans_wait_tx_queues_empty after firmware death events; correlate with Intel WiFi driver activity and any sudden loss of network connectivity on affected systems.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrades on all systems using Intel iwlwifi drivers within the next patch cycle
- Monitor CISA KEV for related Linux kernel entries and adjust timelines accordingly
- Add kernel warning logs for iwlwifi to SIEM for early detection of firmware issues
- Test wireless failover and recovery procedures after applying fixes
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: iwlwifi: mvm: don't wait for tx queues if firmware is dead There is a WARNING in iwl_trans_wait_tx_queues_empty() (that was recently converted from just a message), that can be hit if we wait for TX queues to become empty after firmware died. Clearly, we can't expect anything from the firmware after it's declared dead. Don't call iwl_trans_wait_tx_queues_empty() in this case. While it could be a good idea to stop the flow earlier, the flush functions do some maintenance work that is not related to the firmware, so keep that part of the code running even when the firmware is not running.
