What it actually does
utils.get_shared_secret() unconditionally returns -1, disabling all authentication checks on the XML-RPC interface and permitting any network caller to authenticate as the empty user with password -1, resulting in full administrative control over Cobbler.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers gain complete control of network boot and OS deployment infrastructure, enabling supply-chain tampering, unauthorized system provisioning, or lateral movement across managed environments; weaponized exploit increases urgency.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with network access to a Cobbler server issues an XML-RPC call using empty username and password -1; because the shared-secret function always returns -1, the call succeeds and the attacker obtains an authenticated session with full management privileges. Publicly weaponized exploits facilitate rapid exploitation.
How to fix it
Upgrade cobbler/cobbler to a version containing commit ace629391c7d3a731739092b27067c270d97f470 (equivalent to 3.2.3 or 3.3.7); restrict network access to the XML-RPC port until patched.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed package or source tree contains commit ace629391c7d3a731739092b27067c270d97f470; test that get_shared_secret returns a non-constant value and that authentication with ''/-1 is rejected.
Typical attack path
- Locate exposed Cobbler XML-RPC endpoint via network scanning
- Connect to the XML-RPC service
- Authenticate using username '' and password -1
- Issue management commands to modify configuration, add systems, or execute arbitrary actions
How to detect it
Review Cobbler XML-RPC access logs for authentication attempts using an empty username paired with password value -1; correlate with process execution of cobblerd or related management scripts.
- username='' password=-1
- XML-RPC method call with shared-secret -1
- cobblerd process accepting unauthenticated management requests
What your security team should do
- Apply the fixed commit or upgrade to 3.2.3/3.3.7 immediately
- Place Cobbler behind a firewall allowing only trusted management hosts
- Audit recent XML-RPC activity for unauthenticated sessions
- Monitor EPSS and exploit maturity indicators for changes
The record
Cobbler, a Linux installation server that allows for rapid setup of network installation environments, has an improper authentication vulnerability starting in version 3.0.0 and prior to versions 3.2.3 and 3.3.7. `utils.get_shared_secret()` always returns `-1`, which allows anyone to connect to cobbler XML-RPC as user `''` password `-1` and make any changes. This gives anyone with network access to a cobbler server full control of the server. Versions 3.2.3 and 3.3.7 fix the issue.
