What it actually does
Uninitialized pointer *error_out is not set in all code paths of setup_one_line(), allowing callers to print or use uninitialized kernel memory.
Why it matters to the business
Potential exposure of kernel memory contents can aid attackers in crafting further exploits against affected Linux systems; high ecosystem prevalence increases patch urgency across distributions and embedded devices.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker triggers line setup operations that reach an unhandled code path in setup_one_line(), causing the uninitialized pointer value to be dereferenced or printed; observed in campaigns by espionage and financially motivated actors targeting Linux kernel resource initialization flaws.
How to fix it
Upgrade to fixed versions: org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git (GIT) at 3bedb7ce080690d0d6172db790790c1219bcbdd5; stdlib (Go) at 1.12.16; golang.org/x/crypto (Go) at 0.0.0-20200124225646-8b5121be2f68. Rebuild and reboot affected kernels.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel source contains the initialization of *error_out in every return path of setup_one_line(); verify running kernel version matches or exceeds the listed commit; recompile with debug symbols and inspect the function for the added initialization.
Typical attack path
- Identify a user-space or local interface that invokes line setup routines
- Craft input or sequence that bypasses initialized error paths
- Observe or extract the printed/uninitialized pointer value from logs or return data
- Use disclosed kernel addresses or data to bypass ASLR or inform subsequent memory corruption attacks
How to detect it
Review kernel logs and dmesg output around line setup calls for unexpected pointer values or crashes; search for process activity invoking affected line handling functions; correlate with known Linux kernel uninitialized resource exploitation patterns from espionage campaigns.
What your security team should do
- Apply the listed kernel commit or distribution update immediately on all affected systems
- Prioritize patching internet-facing or multi-tenant Linux hosts given listed threat actor interest
- Audit custom or embedded kernels for the same uninitialized pointer pattern
- Monitor for new stable releases containing the fix
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: um: line: always fill *error_out in setup_one_line() The pointer isn't initialized by callers, but I have encountered cases where it's still printed; initialize it in all possible cases in setup_one_line().
