What it actually does

Race condition in Linux kernel CAN BCM socket handling allows a proc entry to be leaked when a bound netdev is unregistered (resetting bcm_sk(sk)->bound) and a subsequent connect() with ifindex 0 attempts to register the same proc name, triggering proc_register warnings and leaving bcm_sk(sk)->bcm_proc_read as NULL.

Why it matters to the business

Kernel stability issues and potential resource exhaustion on systems using CAN networking; low immediate risk but requires prompt patching on affected Linux distributions given widespread kernel deployment.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access creates a BCM socket, connects it to a virtual CAN device such as vxcan1, triggers device removal, then issues a second connect using ifindex 0; this bypasses the bound flag check and attempts duplicate proc entry creation, producing the observed warning and entry leak.

How to fix it

Update the Linux kernel to commit 5c680022c4e28ba18ea500f3e29f0428271afa92 or later stable releases that remove the proc entry on netdev unregistration; apply distribution-specific backports that include the bcm_notify cleanup logic.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify the fix by confirming the presence of the cleanup call in bcm_notify() within net/can/bcm.c and testing that repeated connect/remove/connect sequences no longer emit proc_dir_entry warnings or leak entries under /proc/net/can-bcm.

Typical attack path

  1. Create BCM socket via socket(AF_CAN, SOCK_DGRAM, CAN_BCM)
  2. Connect socket to a bound netdev (e.g., vxcan1)
  3. Remove or unregister the bound netdev
  4. Re-issue connect() with ifindex == 0
  5. Trigger proc_register collision and leak

How to detect it

Search kernel logs for the exact warning "proc_dir_entry 'can-bcm/" or "proc_register" failures originating from net/can/bcm.c; inspect /proc/net/can-bcm for unexpected entries after device removal events.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel updates on any host exposing CAN interfaces or running automotive/embedded workloads
  • Monitor for the specific proc_register warning string in kernel logs
  • Restrict unprivileged local access on systems where CAN BCM sockets are enabled until patched

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: can: bcm: Remove proc entry when dev is unregistered. syzkaller reported a warning in bcm_connect() below. [0] The repro calls connect() to vxcan1, removes vxcan1, and calls connect() with ifindex == 0. Calling connect() for a BCM socket allocates a proc entry. Then, bcm_sk(sk)->bound is set to 1 to prevent further connect(). However, removing the bound device resets bcm_sk(sk)->bound to 0 in bcm_notify(). The 2nd connect() tries to allocate a proc entry with the same name and sets NULL to bcm_sk(sk)->bcm_proc_read, leaking the original proc entry. Since the proc entry is available only for connect()ed sockets, let's clean up the entry when the bound netdev is unregistered.
