What it actually does
Out-of-bounds write in netif_queue_set_napi caused by napi-to-queue assignment that incorrectly includes XDP queues during ice_vsi_close, triggered from reset paths that bypass proper rtnl locking.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel memory corruption or crashes on systems with Intel ice network adapters can cause denial of service, unplanned reboots, and potential local privilege escalation; high ecosystem prevalence of the Linux kernel increases exposure across servers and appliances.
How an attack unfolds
A local attacker triggers a PCI function reset or VSI close (for example via sysfs reset_store or driver unload), reaching ice_prepare_for_reset and ice_vsi_close; the flawed netif_queue_set_napi call then performs an out-of-bounds write because XDP queues were erroneously included in the napi mapping.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 2285c2faef19ee08a6bd6754f4c3ec07dceb2889; rebuild and reboot with the patched ice driver; ensure rtnl-protected paths are used for napi queue assignment.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains commit 2285c2faef19ee08a6bd6754f4c3ec07dceb2889, verify that netif_queue_set_napi is called only from rtnl-locked open/close paths, and test that XDP queues are excluded from the napi mapping.
Typical attack path
- Local user writes to reset_store or initiates device reset
- ice_pf_dis_all_vsi / ice_dis_vsi calls ice_vsi_close
- ice_vsi_close invokes netif_queue_set_napi with corrupted queue-to-napi mapping
- KASAN-detected slab-out-of-bounds write occurs at netif_queue_set_napi+0x1c2
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for KASAN reports citing slab-out-of-bounds in netif_queue_set_napi during ice_vsi_close or reset operations; correlate with process names such as bash writing to reset_store and call traces containing ice_prepare_for_reset.

What your security team should do
- Apply the fixed kernel commit 2285c2faef19ee08a6bd6754f4c3ec07dceb2889 on all affected hosts within the next maintenance window
- Restrict unprivileged local access on systems using the ice driver until patched
- Monitor kernel logs for KASAN slab-out-of-bounds reports involving netif_queue_set_napi and ice_vsi_close
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ice: move netif_queue_set_napi to rtnl-protected sections Currently, netif_queue_set_napi() is called from ice_vsi_rebuild() that is not rtnl-locked when called from the reset. This creates the need to take the rtnl_lock just for a single function and complicates the synchronization with .ndo_bpf. At the same time, there no actual need to fill napi-to-queue information at this exact point. Fill napi-to-queue information when opening the VSI and clear it when the VSI is being closed. Those routines are already rtnl-locked. Also, rewrite napi-to-queue assignment in a way that prevents inclusion of XDP queues, as this leads to out-of-bounds writes, such as one below.
