A bug in the Linux kernel can let a program on the same machine read a little too much memory when setting up certain hardware interrupts, which might crash the system or leak small amounts of data.

What it actually does
Out-of-bounds read in of_irq_parse_raw when a device address shorter than the interrupt parent's #address-cells value is copied into a fixed-size match table, detected by KASAN as slab-out-of-bounds.
Why it matters to the business
Local denial of service or potential kernel information leak on Linux systems during device tree parsing and platform device registration, especially in embedded or overlay-heavy environments; urgency remains low given absence from KEV and stable low EPSS.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access triggers device tree changes or platform device addition that calls of_irq_parse_one and of_irq_parse_raw with an undersized address, causing the kernel to read past the supplied buffer while populating the interrupt specifier match table.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit d2a79494d8a5262949736fb2c3ac44d20a51b0d8 or later stable releases; rebuild and reboot with the patched tree.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel source contains the fix commit, recompile with KASAN enabled, and verify no out-of-bounds report occurs when exercising of_irq_parse_raw paths with mismatched address-cell sizes.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local shell or userland execution on affected Linux system
- Trigger device tree overlay application or platform device creation that invokes parse_interrupts
- Supply an interrupt parent node whose #address-cells exceeds the device address length provided
- Cause of_irq_parse_raw to perform the out-of-bounds read while building the match table
- Observe KASAN report or kernel oops / information disclosure
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and KASAN reports for strings referencing of_irq_parse_raw, of_irq_parse_one, and slab-out-of-bounds during device_add or of_platform_bus_create; correlate with device-tree overlay apply events.
- BUG: KASAN: slab-out-of-bounds in of_irq_parse_raw
- of_irq_parse_raw+0x2b8/0x8d0
- Read of size 4 at addr .* by task .*
- OF: of_irq_parse_raw: ipar=.* size=2
- of_overlay_fdt_apply
What your security team should do
- Apply the referenced kernel commit or newer distribution packages immediately on all affected systems
- Monitor for device-tree overlay usage and platform device registration in logs
- Re-test custom device trees and overlays after upgrade to ensure interrupt mapping succeeds without faults
