A bug in how the Linux kernel cleans up certain communication resources inside virtual machines could let an attacker on the same system cause crashes or potentially take over more control.

What it actually does
Use-after-free in vmci_resource_remove() when resources share identical handles but differ in type; the resource table retains a dangling pointer to a freed object after vmci_datagram_destroy_handle() or similar frees it.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel instability, crashes, or local privilege escalation on Linux systems and virtualized environments using VMCI; low immediate urgency given absence from KEV and modest EPSS but still requires patching of affected kernels and dependent packages.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access creates multiple VMCI resources that collide on handle (same context/resource fields, different types), triggers removal of one resource via normal operations such as queue-pair detach or context teardown, then reuses the freed object through the stale table pointer to achieve use-after-free.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit f6365931bf7c07b2b397dbb06a4f6573cc9fae73; update github.com/edgelesssys/marblerun to version 1.4.1 or later.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the presence of commit f6365931bf7c07b2b397dbb06a4f6573cc9fae73 in the running kernel source or package; recompile with KASAN and confirm absence of the reported use-after-free in vmci_resource_remove; test VMCI resource creation and removal under load.
Typical attack path
- Create two VMCI resources with identical handles but different types
- Initiate removal of one resource via vmci_resource_remove
- Trigger code paths that dereference the now-freed object from the resource table
- Exploit the use-after-free for memory corruption or information disclosure
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and KASAN reports for strings referencing vmci_resource_remove and use-after-free; inspect audit logs for unusual VMCI handle creation or context teardown events around the time of crashes.
- BUG: KASAN: use-after-free in vmci_handle_is_equal
- vmci_resource_remove+0x3a1/0x410
- vmci_qp_broker_detach
- ctx_free_ctx
What your security team should do
- Apply kernel updates containing f6365931bf7c07b2b397dbb06a4f6573cc9fae73 immediately on all systems exposing VMCI
- Update marblerun deployments to 1.4.1
- Monitor kernel logs for KASAN reports referencing vmci_resource_remove
- Limit untrusted local access to systems using VMCI until patched
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: VMCI: Fix use-after-free when removing resource in vmci_resource_remove() When removing a resource from vmci_resource_table in vmci_resource_remove(), the search is performed using the resource handle by comparing context and resource fields. It is possible though to create two resources with different types but same handle (same context and resource fields). When trying to remove one of the resources, vmci_resource_remove() may not remove the intended one, but the object will still be freed as in the case of the datagram type in vmci_datagram_destroy_handle(). vmci_resource_table will still hold a pointer to this freed resource leading to a use-after-free vulnerability.
