What it actually does
The flaw allows writing MES packets to the AMD GPU ring buffer without first verifying sufficient available space, resulting in a buffer overflow and potential memory corruption.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using AMD GPUs may experience kernel instability, crashes, or local privilege escalation, disrupting operations on affected Linux distributions until patched.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access submits crafted workloads or commands that trigger repeated MES packet submissions faster than the ring buffer can drain, overflowing the buffer and corrupting adjacent kernel memory to achieve code execution or denial of service.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to version 6.10.9-1 or later on Debian 13 systems; apply the fix that adds explicit room-wait checks before MES packet writes.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel version is at least 6.10.9-1, review dmesg for MES-related warnings, and confirm the patch commit 34e087e8920e is present in the source.
Typical attack path
- Gain local user access on a system with an AMD GPU
- Trigger or submit GPU workloads that exercise the MES submission path
- Rapidly issue commands to exhaust ring buffer space before the wait logic is applied
- Exploit the resulting memory corruption for privilege escalation or crash
How to detect it
Search kernel logs for amdgpu MES ring buffer errors or overflows, monitor for unexpected process crashes involving the GPU driver, and review audit logs for unusual local GPU command submissions.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrades on all Debian 13 systems with AMD GPUs
- Monitor for kernel oops or panics involving amdgpu/mes after deployment
- Restrict unprivileged GPU access via device permissions where feasible until patched
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/amdgpu/mes: fix mes ring buffer overflow wait memory room until enough before writing mes packets to avoid ring buffer overflow. v2: squash in sched_hw_submission fix (cherry picked from commit 34e087e8920e635c62e2ed6a758b0cd27f836d13)
