What it actually does
Race condition in btnxpuart driver allows ps_wakeup() to schedule psdata->work() after module unload when Power Save is enabled, resulting in kernel paging fault and oops during workqueue execution.
Why it matters to the business
Causes unpredictable system crashes and reboots on Linux devices using the affected Bluetooth UART driver during driver unload operations, leading to downtime and potential data loss in embedded or IoT environments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access repeatedly loads and unloads the btnxpuart module while performing Bluetooth resets, triggering the scheduled work item to run after the module is removed and dereference invalid memory.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 662a55986b88807da4d112d838c8aaa05810e938 which adds ps_cleanup() to cancel work and clean up resources before module removal.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel version includes the referenced commit, then execute repeated modprobe load/unload cycles with Bluetooth reset operations and verify absence of oops or paging faults.
Typical attack path
- modprobe btnxpuart
- hciconfig hci0 reset
- Verify interface and unload module with modprobe -r btnxpuart
- Repeat load/unload cycle to schedule work after removal
How to detect it
Search kernel logs for oops messages containing 'Unable to handle kernel paging request', 'btnxpuart', workqueue events, and references to ps_work or module unload.
- btnxpuart(O)
- ps_wakeup
- psdata->work
- ffffd4a61638f258
- Workqueue: events
- Tainted: G O
What your security team should do
- Apply the kernel fix containing commit 662a55986b88807da4d112d838c8aaa05810e938 immediately on affected systems
- Monitor kernel logs for btnxpuart-related oops during module operations
- Disable Power Save feature if patching is delayed on non-critical systems
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: Bluetooth: btnxpuart: Fix random crash seen while removing driver This fixes the random kernel crash seen while removing the driver, when running the load/unload test over multiple iterations. 1) modprobe btnxpuart 2) hciconfig hci0 reset 3) hciconfig (check hci0 interface up with valid BD address) 4) modprobe -r btnxpuart Repeat steps 1 to 4 The ps_wakeup() call in btnxpuart_close() schedules the psdata->work(), which gets scheduled after module is removed, causing a kernel crash. This hidden issue got highlighted after enabling Power Save by default in 4183a7be7700 (Bluetooth: btnxpuart: Enable Power Save feature on startup) The new ps_cleanup() deasserts UART break immediately while closing serdev device, cancels any scheduled ps_work and destroys the ps_lock mutex.
