What it actually does
The flaw permits IPsec state creation on a slave mlx5 device when the master lacks IPsec support, leading to an invalid semaphore acquisition during mlx5_devcom_for_each_peer_begin and subsequent xfrm state garbage collection that triggers a kernel warning in down_read.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using mlx5 network hardware with IPsec and RoCE may experience kernel warnings or instability that disrupts network traffic handling and requires administrative intervention to stabilize.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker or automated configuration tool attempts IPsec setup over a slave interface on an unsupported master device; this causes the mlx5 IPsec RoCE TX destroy path to invoke peer iteration without proper locking, hitting the semaphore warning during xfrm_state_gc_task execution.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 2ae52a65a850ded75a94e8d7ec1e09737f4c6509. Apply the fixed package versions for any affected distributions or rebuilds listed in the advisory.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel includes commit 2ae52a65a850ded75a94e8d7ec1e09737f4c6509; attempt IPsec configuration on a slave device of an unsupported master and verify absence of the down_read warning in dmesg.
Typical attack path
- Identify mlx5 device with master/slave relationship lacking IPsec support on master
- Trigger IPsec state creation on the slave interface
- Initiate state destruction via xfrm garbage collection
- Invoke mlx5_devcom_for_each_peer_begin leading to down_read on invalid context
- Observe kernel warning and potential follow-on effects in network stack
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for the specific down_read warning trace involving mlx5_devcom_for_each_peer_begin, mlx5_ipsec_fs_roce_tx_destroy, and xfrm_state_gc_task; correlate with process names kworker and events related to IPsec state teardown.

What your security team should do
- Apply kernel updates containing the referenced commit on all systems with mlx5 devices
- Review IPsec configurations to ensure master devices declare IPsec capability before enabling on slaves
- Monitor kernel logs for rwsem and mlx5_ipsec warnings as part of routine stability checks
- Test network failover and IPsec setups in staging environments after patching
