What it actually does
Race condition in fscache_cookie_state_machine allows withdrawal of a cookie with pending n_accesses, leading to cachefiles_prepare_write dereferencing a NULL object->volume->cache pointer and causing a kernel NULL pointer dereference oops.
Why it matters to the business
Systems running affected Linux kernels with fscache enabled for NFS or similar workloads can experience sudden kernel crashes and reboots, disrupting services and requiring manual recovery or failover.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with the ability to influence fscache cookie lifecycle (via local processes or network-triggered cache operations) triggers concurrent fscache_unuse_cookie and LRU discard paths while a write operation is in flight; the missing n_accesses guard lets the cookie be withdrawn, causing the subsequent prepare_write to hit the NULL dereference and panic the kernel.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit b8a50877f68efdcc0be3fcc5116e00c31b90e45b or later; rebuild and reboot with the patched kernel. Disable fscache where not required as a temporary mitigation.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains commit b8a50877f68efdcc0be3fcc5116e00c31b90e45b via uname or kernel source; reproduce cache operations under load and verify absence of the described NULL dereference oops in dmesg.
Typical attack path
- Gain local execution or trigger cache operations on a system using fscache
- Force rapid cookie use/unuse cycles combined with LRU pressure
- Trigger netfs write-to-cache work while the state machine is in the LRU_DISCARDING path
- Cause cachefiles_prepare_write to read through a cleared cache_priv pointer
- Kernel oops and potential denial of service or system reboot
How to detect it
Search kernel logs (dmesg, /var/log/kern.log, journalctl) for "BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference" combined with "cachefiles_prepare_write" and "netfs_rreq_write_to_cache_work"; look for call traces showing fscache_cookie_state_machine and FSCACHE_COOKIE_DO_LRU_DISCARD.

What your security team should do
- Apply the kernel patch containing b8a50877f68efdcc0be3fcc5116e00c31b90e45b immediately on all systems using fscache
- Prioritize patching of internet-facing or high-value Linux servers first
- Monitor for kernel oops related to cachefiles_prepare_write and netfs_rreq_write_to_cache_work
- Consider disabling fscache on systems where caching is non-essential until patched

At the same time, yet another process invoked cachefiles_prepare_write(), which found a NULL pointer in this code line: struct cachefiles_object *object = cachefiles_cres_object(cres); The next line crashes, obviously: struct cachefiles_cache *cache = object->volume->cache; During cachefiles_prepare_write(), the "n_accesses" counter is non-zero (via fscache_begin_operation()). The cookie must not be withdrawn until it drops to zero. The counter is checked by fscache_cookie_state_machine() before switching to FSCACHE_COOKIE_STATE_RELINQUISHING and FSCACHE_COOKIE_STATE_WITHDRAWING (in "case FSCACHE_COOKIE_STATE_FAILED"), but not for FSCACHE_COOKIE_STATE_LRU_DISCARDING ("case FSCACHE_COOKIE_STATE_ACTIVE"). This patch adds the missing check. With a non-zero access counter, the function returns and the next fscache_end_cookie_access() call will queue another fscache_cookie_state_machine() call to handle the still-pending FSCACHE_COOKIE_DO_LRU_DISCARD.
