What it actually does
Use-after-free in ip6_finish_output2() when skb_expand_head() returns NULL, allowing access to a freed skb and its associated dst/idev structures without proper RCU protection.
Why it matters to the business
Local attackers can achieve full system compromise on affected Linux systems, leading to data theft, ransomware deployment, or persistent unauthorized access; the large number of downstream Linux distributions and embedded devices increases exposure across enterprise and cloud environments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access crafts network traffic or uses a program to trigger IPv6 output paths that invoke skb_expand_head() under memory pressure, causing the skb and dst/idev to be freed; without the RCU lock the code then dereferences the freed objects to read or write kernel memory, escalating privileges. Threat actors in 2024 zero-day campaigns have targeted similar Linux kernel memory issues for espionage and financial gain.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to the fixed commit e891b36de161fcd96f12ff83667473e5067b9037 or later stable releases that include the RCU lock around dst/idev access; rebuild and reboot all affected systems; apply the same update to any downstream distributions or embedded devices.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel contains commit e891b36de161fcd96f12ff83667473e5067b9037 via uname or kernel source; recompile a test kernel with the vulnerable code path and confirm the RCU lock prevents the UAF under memory-pressure test cases.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local user access on a vulnerable Linux system
- Trigger IPv6 packet processing that leads to skb_expand_head() failure
- Race the freed dst/idev structures before RCU grace period
- Use the dangling references to corrupt kernel memory or leak data
- Escalate to root and install persistence or exfiltrate data
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for oops or slab-use-after-free warnings involving ip6_finish_output2 or skb_expand_head; correlate with process creation events around IPv6 socket activity; examine threat actor TTPs from 2024 zero-day campaigns for similar local kernel exploits.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all internet-facing and multi-tenant Linux hosts within the CISA-style remediation window
- Enable kernel hardening features such as KASAN and lockdown mode where possible
- Monitor for local privilege-escalation attempts via auditd and eBPF
- Inventory all devices running the affected stable kernel trees and schedule phased reboots
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ipv6: fix possible UAF in ip6_finish_output2() If skb_expand_head() returns NULL, skb has been freed and associated dst/idev could also have been freed. We need to hold rcu_read_lock() to make sure the dst and associated idev are alive.
