What it actually does
Incorrect signed integer arithmetic in shift_and_mask() produces subtraction overflow when invoked with WORK_OFFQ_POOL_SHIFT (31), triggering UBSAN and kernel panic during early boot on affected virtualized Android environments.
Why it matters to the business
Systems running vulnerable kernels may fail to boot in virtualized setups, causing downtime for cloud workloads, Android emulators, and embedded deployments until patched kernels are deployed.
How an attack unfolds
No active exploitation path exists; the flaw manifests automatically during kernel initialization when deferred_probe_extend_timeout calls cancel_delayed_work with a shift value of 31, and no threat actors or campaigns are associated with this issue.
How to fix it
Upgrade to Linux kernel 6.10.7 or later, or apply commit 90a6a844b2d9927d192758438a4ada33d8cd9de5 in the stable tree; rebuild and deploy the fixed kernel image to affected hosts.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel version is at least 6.10.7; attempt reproduction boot in the same virtualized environment and verify absence of the UBSAN subtraction overflow panic; inspect dmesg for clean initialization without the reported trace.
Typical attack path
- Boot kernel in virtual machine on Android-derived configuration
- Platform driver registration triggers deferred probe timeout extension
- cancel_delayed_work invoked with WORK_OFFQ_POOL_SHIFT
- shift_and_mask performs signed subtraction from INT_MIN
- UBSAN reports overflow and kernel panics
How to detect it
Review kernel boot logs and dmesg for the exact UBSAN integer subtraction overflow message and the cancel_delayed_work call trace; no post-exploitation artifacts exist because the condition occurs at init time.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching kernel packages on all virtualized Android and embedded Linux deployments within the next maintenance window
- Update build pipelines and distribution images to include the fixed commit or 6.10.7
- Monitor boot logs on test VMs matching the reported hardware name linux,dummy-virt for residual exposure
