What it actually does

The flaw fails to clear the PageDirty flag inside extent_write_locked_range for subpage + zoned btrfs configurations, allowing buffered writes followed by direct IO to leave reserved data extents marked dirty and unaccounted, resulting in reservation leaks detected at inode destruction and block group teardown on unmount.

Why it matters to the business

Systems using btrfs on zoned storage with 4K sectors and 64K pages may experience repeated unmount-time warnings, leaked block reservations, and eventual filesystem or memory pressure that requires reboot or manual intervention; prevalence is limited to specific kernel builds and zoned hardware.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access crafts a sequence of buffered writes, fiemap, and direct writes against a btrfs file on a zoned device (as demonstrated by fsstress), leaving dirty pages whose reservations are not released; on umount the kernel emits warnings and reports non-zero may_use reservations, confirming the leak.

How to fix it

Upgrade the Linux kernel to version 6.6.46 or later, or apply commit ba4dedb71356638d8284e34724daca944be70368; rebuild and reboot with the fixed kernel; for systems that cannot upgrade immediately, avoid subpage zoned btrfs mounts or disable direct IO workloads on affected filesystems.

How to confirm the fix worked

After patching, repeat the original fsstress workload followed by umount and confirm absence of btrfs_destroy_inode and btrfs_free_block_groups reservation warnings; verify space_info shows zero may_use reservations for DATA and METADATA after unmount.

Typical attack path

  1. Mount a btrfs filesystem on a zoned block device with subpage support enabled
  2. Perform mixed buffered and direct writes that straddle page boundaries
  3. Trigger unmount or filesystem teardown
  4. Observe reservation leak warnings in dmesg and non-zero reserved space in space_info

How to detect it

Search kernel logs and journalctl for btrfs_destroy_inode and btrfs_free_block_groups warnings containing reservation leak messages; inspect space_info output after unmount for non-zero may_use values on DATA or METADATA; no network or user-space artifacts exist.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel upgrade to 6.6.46+ on any host exposing btrfs on zoned devices
  • Add kernel version checks to asset inventory and flag pre-6.6.46 builds
  • Temporarily restrict direct IO and subpage workloads on zoned btrfs until patched
  • Monitor dmesg and journal for btrfs reservation leak warnings as a compensating control
