What it actually does
Race condition in f2fs extent cache allows concurrent shrink operation to free an extent node while sanity_check_extent_cache reads it without holding the lock, resulting in slab use-after-free.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using f2fs filesystems face kernel instability or potential local privilege escalation; widespread in Android and Linux distributions increases exposure for mobile and server fleets until patched.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access triggers inode loading via NFS file handle decoding while a concurrent shrink detaches the largest extent entry; the unlocked sanity check then dereferences the freed object, enabling memory corruption.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 263df78166d3a9609b97d28c34029bd01874cbb8; rebuild and reboot affected systems; for Android devices apply the corresponding 2022-12-01 security patches across all supported branches.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel version includes the referenced commit; run syzkaller-style reproducers targeting f2fs extent cache under memory pressure; verify absence of KASAN reports in sanity_check_extent_cache during inode operations.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local code execution on target system
- Open or resolve an f2fs inode through exportfs or NFS handle path
- Force concurrent extent cache shrink via memory pressure or f2fs operations
- Trigger sanity_check_extent_cache during do_read_inode to hit freed memory
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for KASAN slab-use-after-free reports naming sanity_check_extent_cache or extent_cache.c; inspect f2fs inode and NFS handle code paths for concurrent shrink activity; correlate with f2fs_shrink_read_extent_tree calls under memory pressure.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all f2fs-using hosts within standard patching windows
- Monitor vendor advisories for backported fixes in LTS kernels
- Restrict untrusted local access and NFS export usage on f2fs volumes until updated
