What it actually does
Use-after-free in xc2028 tuner driver where load_firmware_cb accesses a dvb_frontend struct after it was freed by tuner_remove when module initialization fails.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel crashes or potential code execution on Linux systems with xc2028-based media devices during driver load errors, disrupting media capture and risking system compromise on affected servers or embedded devices.
How an attack unfolds
Attacker triggers tuner_probe allocation followed by init failure that frees the struct; the pending async firmware worker then executes load_firmware_cb on the now-freed memory, enabling use-after-free exploitation.
How to fix it
Update Linux kernel to commit ef517bdfc01818419f7bd426969a0c86b14f3e0e or later; apply the referenced Android framework fixes dated 2022-12-01 for versions 11, 12, 12L, and 13.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm presence of the null-check guard on dvb_frontend inside load_firmware_cb in the running kernel source and reproduce the original syzkaller-reported allocation/free sequence to verify absence of KASAN reports.
Typical attack path
- Trigger device probe that calls tuner_probe and allocates dvb_frontend
- Force module initialization failure to invoke tuner_remove and free the struct
- Allow request_firmware_work_func to run load_firmware_cb on the dangling pointer
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and KASAN reports for use-after-free mentions involving load_firmware_cb, request_firmware_work_func, tuner_probe, and tuner_remove during device initialization.
- load_firmware_cb+0x1310/0x17a0
- BUG: KASAN: use-after-free in load_firmware_cb
- request_firmware_work_func
- tuner_probe
- tuner_remove
What your security team should do
- Apply kernel and Android patches immediately on any system exposing media drivers
- Temporarily blacklist xc2028 and related em28xx modules where patching is delayed
- Enable KASAN or similar memory debugging in test environments to catch similar use-after-free patterns
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: media: xc2028: avoid use-after-free in load_firmware_cb() syzkaller reported use-after-free in load_firmware_cb() [1]. The reason is because the module allocated a struct tuner in tuner_probe(), and then the module initialization failed, the struct tuner was released. A worker which created during module initialization accesses this struct tuner later, it caused use-after-free. The process is as follows: task-6504 worker_thread tuner_probe <= alloc dvb_frontend [2] ... request_firmware_nowait <= create a worker ... tuner_remove <= free dvb_frontend ... request_firmware_work_func <= the firmware is ready load_firmware_cb <= but now the dvb_frontend has been freed To fix the issue, check the dvd_frontend in load_firmware_cb(), if it is null, report a warning and just return.
