What it actually does
Insufficient buffer size in bna_tcb and bna_ccb structures allows sprintf to overflow the 'name' field when formatting netdev names and IDs, resulting in memory corruption in the Linux kernel bna driver.
Why it matters to the business
Local attackers can achieve privilege escalation or system instability on affected Linux systems; with 54 downstream dependents the issue raises patching urgency across the ecosystem even though EPSS remains low and it is not tracked in KEV.
How an attack unfolds
A local low-privileged attacker supplies a netdev name long enough to overflow the undersized buffer during sprintf formatting of tx/rx IDs inside the bna driver; the resulting out-of-bounds write can be leveraged for code execution, consistent with observed Linux kernel exploitation patterns by espionage and financially motivated actors.
How to fix it
Apply kernel patches that enlarge the name buffers and replace sprintf with snprintf; for celery (PyPI) deployments upgrade to version 5.2.2.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the source change that increases 'name' array size and switches to snprintf; test by exercising bna queue initialization with maximum-length device names and verify no overflow occurs.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local user access on a system using the vulnerable bna driver
- Trigger device initialization or queue setup that invokes sprintf on the undersized name buffer
- Craft input that exceeds the 16-byte limit with netdev name plus numeric IDs
- Overwrite adjacent kernel memory to achieve code execution or denial of service
How to detect it
Review kernel logs and audit records for bna driver initialization messages containing unusually long device names or truncated ID strings; look for crashes or oops reports referencing bna_tcb or bna_ccb structures.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on systems exposing the bna driver
- Inventory all downstream dependents (54 reported) and schedule celery upgrades to 5.2.2
- Monitor for local privilege-escalation attempts against kernel networking modules
- Harden local access controls until patches are deployed
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bna: adjust 'name' buf size of bna_tcb and bna_ccb structures To have enough space to write all possible sprintf() args. Currently 'name' size is 16, but the first '%s' specifier may already need at least 16 characters, since 'bnad->netdev->name' is used there. For '%d' specifiers, assume that they require: * 1 char for 'tx_id + tx_info->tcb[i]->id' sum, BNAD_MAX_TXQ_PER_TX is 8 * 2 chars for 'rx_id + rx_info->rx_ctrl[i].ccb->id', BNAD_MAX_RXP_PER_RX is 16 And replace sprintf with snprintf. Detected using the static analysis tool - Svace.
