What it actually does
The adjust_jmp_off() function performed an incorrect overflow validation on jump instructions by always inspecting the insn->imm field instead of using insn->off for the general BPF_JMP case, allowing malformed jump offsets to pass validation.
Why it matters to the business
Organizations running affected Linux kernels may experience unexpected system instability, crashes, or potential bypass of safety checks when loading untrusted or malicious BPF programs, increasing operational risk until kernels are updated.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts a BPF program containing a jump instruction with an out-of-range offset that evades the flawed overflow check; when the kernel loads and verifies the program the invalid offset is accepted, which may later trigger memory corruption or verifier bypass during execution.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 0c3836482481200ead7b416ca80c68a29cfdaabd or later; rebuild and reboot with the patched kernel; restrict unprivileged BPF loading via sysctl kernel.unprivileged_bpf_disabled=1 where feasible.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains commit 0c3836482481200ead7b416ca80c68a29cfdaabd by checking /proc/version or kernel build logs; attempt to load a test BPF program containing an out-of-range jump offset and verify it is now rejected by the verifier.
Typical attack path
- Identify a system exposing unprivileged BPF loading or a privileged context that accepts attacker-controlled programs
- Construct a BPF bytecode sequence using a general jump instruction with a crafted offset value
- Load the program through bpf() syscall or via a user-space tool
- Trigger execution of the loaded program to induce undefined behavior or kernel panic
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for verifier errors or oops messages referencing adjust_jmp_off or BPF jump offsets; inspect audit logs for unusual bpf() syscall usage with programs containing jump instructions; no public exploitation artifacts are known.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on systems that permit BPF program loading from untrusted sources
- Apply the fixed commit or distribution kernel package containing 0c3836482481200ead7b416ca80c68a29cfdaabd
- Enable kernel.unprivileged_bpf_disabled where BPF is not required for normal operation
- Monitor for future BPF-related kernel advisories given the ongoing activity in this subsystem
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bpf: fix overflow check in adjust_jmp_off() adjust_jmp_off() incorrectly used the insn->imm field for all overflow check, which is incorrect as that should only be done or the BPF_JMP32 | BPF_JA case, not the general jump instruction case. Fix it by using insn->off for overflow check in the general case.
