What it actually does
Improper input neutralization in the System Configuration modules permits an authenticated administrator to store cross-site scripting payloads that execute in the browsers of other administrators viewing the configuration.
Why it matters to the business
An attacker who already holds administrative access can manipulate the interface seen by peer administrators, enabling configuration tampering or credential theft within the support ticketing platform and increasing operational risk for organizations relying on OTRS for customer service workflows.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker authenticates with existing admin credentials, navigates to the System Configuration editor, submits a malicious script payload in a configuration value, and waits for another administrator to load the affected configuration page, at which point the script executes in that administrator's session context.
How to fix it
Upgrade OTRS installations to the latest patched releases that address input sanitization in the System Configuration modules; restrict administrative access to trusted networks and implement additional web application firewall rules that sanitize or block script content in configuration endpoints.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed OTRS version is newer than the affected ranges listed in the advisory, review release notes for the XSS fix in System Configuration, and perform a manual test by attempting to store and render a benign script tag in the configuration interface while observing browser behavior.
Typical attack path
- Obtain administrative credentials through prior compromise or insider access
- Access the System Configuration module via the web interface
- Inject a crafted script payload into one or more configuration parameters
- Trigger execution when a second administrator views or edits the same configuration section
- Leverage executed script to exfiltrate session tokens or alter configuration values
How to detect it
Review web server and application logs for POST or PUT requests to system configuration endpoints containing script tags or event handlers; examine audit trails for unexpected configuration values that include HTML or JavaScript syntax; monitor admin session activity for anomalous redirects or data exfiltration after configuration edits.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize upgrade of all OTRS instances to fixed versions within the next maintenance window
- Audit current administrative accounts and reduce unnecessary privileges
- Enable enhanced logging of configuration changes and review for unexpected script content
- Deploy web application firewall rules targeting script injection in administrative endpoints
The record
Improper Neutralization of Input done by an attacker with admin privileges ('Cross-site Scripting') in OTRS (System Configuration modules) and ((OTRS)) Community Edition allows Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) within the System Configuration targeting other admins. This issue affects: * OTRS from 7.0.X through 7.0.50 * OTRS 8.0.X * OTRS 2023.X * OTRS from 2024.X through 2024.5.X * ((OTRS)) Community Edition: 6.0.x Products based on the ((OTRS)) Community Edition also very likely to be affected
